The Game Awards 2024 took place on December 12 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, pairing its awards ceremony with a large slate of game reveals, trailers and updates. The biggest headlines included The Witcher 4, Elden Ring: Nightreign, Naughty Dog’s new game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and a sequel to Okami. Astro Bot won Game of the Year.
What happened at The Game Awards 2024?
Hosted by Geoff Keighley, the December 12 show at Los Angeles’s Peacock Theater mixed awards and special guests with world premieres, gameplay footage, release information and updates to existing games. GameSpot’s announcement roundup covers announcements from the pre-show through the final reveal.
The Game Awards said the 2024 event drew an estimated 154 million global livestreams, up 31% from the 118 million it reported for 2023. These are the organizer’s estimated livestream figures, not independently audited counts of unique viewers.
The biggest new reveals
The Witcher 4
CD Projekt Red opened the main show’s world premieres with The Witcher 4. Its cinematic trailer follows Ciri as she confronts a demon threatening a village and tries to stop a human sacrifice. It introduced the next mainline entry rather than an expansion or gameplay update.

Elden Ring: Nightreign
FromSoftware revealed Elden Ring: Nightreign, a standalone spin-off. The debut trailer showed multiple Tarnished confronting enormous bosses, marking a separate game set in the Elden Ring universe.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet
Naughty Dog announced Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a new game rather than a sequel to one of the studio’s existing series. It appeared among the event’s announcement trailers in The Game Post’s event-wide list.

Okami sequel
Capcom announced that a sequel to Okami is in development. GameSpot reported that Clovers is the studio and series creator Hideki Kamiya is leading the project.
Fumito Ueda’s untitled project
A brief trailer for Fumito Ueda’s project showed a person attempting to escape a catastrophic wave. The game did not have a title at the time of the show, so it was a first look at an unnamed project rather than a fully identified release.

Major franchise trailers and gameplay
Borderlands 4 and Onimusha: Way of the Sword
The event’s broader announcement slate included a first-look trailer for Borderlands 4 and a showing of Capcom’s new Onimusha: Way of the Sword. These were franchise entries, not announcements of unrelated new IP.
The Outer Worlds 2
Obsidian presented the first gameplay trailer for The Outer Worlds 2. In its December 12, 2024 recap, Xbox Wire said the publisher planned a 2025 launch for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam and PlayStation 5, with day-one Game Pass availability. Who won Game of the Year?
Astro Bot won Game of the Year. The award was the ceremony’s top prize; the show’s other major draw was its slate of new reveals and footage. GameSpot’s winners roundup confirms the result.
