Megalopolis arrived at Cannes with a vision of a utopian future—and left some viewers baffled, others impressed, and at least one audience giggling at a very strange prop. The funniest reactions came from that collision: Coppola’s grand, unconventional film met critics’ bewilderment, a bizarre on-screen gag, and a trailer controversy of its own.
What did people think of Megalopolis?
The reactions were split from the film’s May 2024 Cannes premiere. Some critics called it chaotic and hard to unpack; others saw audacity and a distinctive vision in its refusal to behave like a conventional release. These are selected reactions, not a poll of Cannes attendees or a ranking of audience opinion.
- Film critic Bilge Ebiri posted: “MEGALOPOLIS is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.”
- One reaction described the film as “discombobulated,” while others called it “chaotic.”
- Critic Robert Daniels called the first hour “a disaster, an endearing disaster but still poor,” before saying he bought into the second hour.
Those sharply different responses were captured in TheWrap’s report from Cannes. The same qualities could read as exhilarating ambition or as a film that had veered off the rails.
Why is Megalopolis so divisive?
The film sets its argument on a futuristic New Rome, a modern America refracted through Roman history. Architect Cesar Catilina wants to build toward a utopian future; Mayor Franklyn Cicero defends a regressive status quo; Julia Cicero is caught between them. That sweeping premise helps explain the gap in response: viewers who embrace its excess may see a heartfelt attempt to imagine a better society, while viewers seeking a more coherent or conventional drama may find the same scale bewildering.

Coppola acknowledged that it was an unusual proposition. At Cannes he said, “I knew the film was not like other films that are out.” He also said, “It’s how I felt the film should be, and since I was paying for it I thought I was entitled [to do it my way].” The comments, reported by the Los Angeles Times, frame the divide without settling it: artistic freedom can produce a singular vision and leave viewers arguing over whether it works.
The scale was substantial: the Associated Press reported a self-financed budget of $120 million in 2024. Its Cannes coverage described critics split between seeing a “grand folly” and admiring “wild ambition.” That contrast captures the two poles of the reception more accurately than a single verdict.

The Cannes moment that made the audience gasp—and giggle
One of the funniest reactions was to a moment in the film itself. The Washington Post reported that Cannes viewers gasped and giggled when Jon Voight’s dying billionaire appeared to produce a tiny bow and arrow instead of an erection.
It is a pointed example of how Megalopolis could turn a scene into an event in the room. The reported laughter belongs to that screening; it should not be mistaken for a claim that every audience reacted the same way.

When the trailer’s critic quotes became a story of their own
The film’s promotion generated another kind of bewildered reaction. A trailer used negative lines attributed to well-known critics’ reviews of earlier Coppola films, presenting them as part of an argument for his legacy. But Variety reported that the cited phrases could not be found in the versions of those reviews available online. Variety also said its critic Owen Gleiberman was incorrectly cited as describing Bram Stoker’s Dracula as “a beautiful mess.”
Gleiberman objected: “Even if you’re one of those people who don’t like critics, we hardly deserve to have words put in our mouths.” The irony was hard to miss: an attempt to turn critics’ old negative reviews into a defense of Coppola’s career prompted a separate dispute over whether the trailer had quoted those critics accurately. The disputed lines should not be treated as authentic quotations from the original reviews.

How the wider reception looked beyond Cannes
One Rotten Tomatoes snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, listed a 46% Tomatometer from 305 reviews and a 34% Popcornmeter from 500+ verified ratings. Those are changing platform scores, not a settled judgment of artistic merit; the two measures also reflect different inputs. The numbers illustrate a divided reception, but they cannot explain why any individual viewer liked or disliked the film.
Commercial figures tell a different story from critical reactions. ABC News reported that Megalopolis took in US $6.8 million worldwide in its first week in 2024. That historical opening-week figure is context, not evidence of the film’s quality or a direct measure of what audiences thought.
