Yes. Virginia Brown Faire portrayed Tinker Bell in Herbert Brenon’s silent Peter Pan in 1924, 67 years before Hook was released in 1991. There is an important qualification: Faire appears in only a few fleeting close-ups; for the rest of the film, Tinker Bell is shown as a spot of light. (AFI Silver; D23; Hook release reference.)

Who played Tinker Bell before Hook?

Virginia Brown Faire played Tinker Bell in the 1924 Paramount adaptation of J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, directed and produced by Herbert Brenon. The film was the first screen adaptation of the play cited here, which had premiered in 1904. The American Film Institute describes Brenon’s picture as a major hit in 1924. (AFI Silver’s film record.)

The phrase “live-action Tinker Bell” needs a little care. Faire is visible in a few close-ups, but the film represents the fairy as a spot of light for the remainder of the picture. So she was not a human-sized character appearing throughout the movie. (D23’s Tinker Bell history.)

How the 1924 film differs from Disney’s Tinker Bell

Disney’s Peter Pan was an animated feature released on February 5, 1953. Margaret Kerry performed live-action reference footage for the animators’ Tinker Bell; that work informed an animated character rather than making Kerry the first actor to portray Tinker Bell on screen. Faire’s brief appearance in the 1924 film came earlier and was part of the finished movie. (D23’s Disney film entry; D23’s account of the character.)

The distinction is between an actor briefly appearing as Tinker Bell in a live-action film and a performer supplying reference footage for an animated version. Those are different kinds of screen work, even though both involve a live performer.

Where the 1924 Peter Pan fits in the timeline

  • 1904: J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan play predates the film; AFI identifies the 1924 picture as based on the play.
  • 1924: Herbert Brenon’s silent film features Virginia Brown Faire in a few Tinker Bell close-ups, with the fairy otherwise represented by a spot of light.
  • February 5, 1953: Disney releases its animated Peter Pan; Margaret Kerry’s live-action performance served as animation reference.
  • 1991: Hook is released. The 67-year interval from the 1924 film is the difference between those release years, not evidence that Hook introduced live-action Tinker Bell. The cited release-year reference for Hook is secondary. (Hook reference.)

What kind of film is the 1924 Peter Pan?

AFI lists the Paramount production as a silent film with English intertitles, running 105 minutes. It is black and white with color tinting. Those details place Faire’s appearance in the context of a feature-length silent adaptation, not a later Disney production or a brief reference shoot. (AFI Silver’s film record.)
