Lorde criticized the themes of a Lana Del Rey record in 2013; the following year, a report said Del Rey briefly favorited a hostile fan tweet about Lorde. A later Del Rey interview mentioned Lorde but did not establish that she was answering the criticism.
What did Lorde say about Lana Del Rey?
In an interview published by The FADER on August 8, 2013, Lorde criticized what she saw as the unhealthy message in lyrics centered on dependence and desperation. She was almost 17 at the time, according to the interview’s introduction. She said:
“She’s great, but I listened to that Lana Del Rey record and the whole time I was just thinking it’s so unhealthy for young girls to be listening to, you know: ‘I’m nothing without you.’ This sort of shirt-tugging, desperate, don’t leave me stuff. That’s not a good thing for young girls, even young people, to hear.”
Her stated concern was the effect of those themes on young listeners. The interview does not describe a personal confrontation between the singers.

What was the Twitter incident?
On February 18, 2014, Bustle reported that Del Rey had favorited a fan account’s tweet showing a bracelet made from sharp thumbtack ends, with the caption “I bought this for you @lordemusic.” Bustle later reported that the favorite was removed.
This was an indirect social-media episode, as reported by Bustle—not a direct message or an exchange between the two artists. The favorite alone does not establish what Del Rey intended.

Did Lana Del Rey respond to Lorde directly?
In a June 12, 2014 interview with The Guardian, interviewer Tim Jonze mentioned Lorde alongside Miley Cyrus, Lily Allen, Lady Gaga and Sinéad O’Connor. Del Rey replied, “Well maybe those people are true provocateurs,” then contrasted their work with her own. The interview does not say she was responding to Lorde’s 2013 comments, and Del Rey did not explicitly name Lorde in her reply.
The article also identified Born to Die as Del Rey’s previous album and reported that it had sold more than 7 million copies at the time. That is a historical figure reported in 2014, not a current sales total.

Why is the dispute often called a feud?
The label turns a few separate events into a story of sustained personal conflict. The available reporting supports a narrower account: Lorde criticized lyrical themes; Bustle reported an indirect social-media gesture months later; and a 2014 interview included Lorde in a question about several musicians. None of those sources confirms an ongoing rivalry.
A 2020 Guardian retrospective quoted Lorde’s 2013 criticism while discussing arguments over whether Del Rey’s lyrics glamorized abuse. That later context revisits the debate about the music; it does not establish a lasting feud between the artists.
