The Expanse: A Telltale Series is a five-episode prequel adventure centered on Camina Drummer, mixing crew drama and consequential choices with zero-gravity exploration. Official materials confirm its branching systems and accessibility options, while the available review listings offer scores but not enough criticism to establish a reliable list of specific strengths and weaknesses. Here’s what prospective players can verify before deciding.
What kind of game is it?
The game follows Camina Drummer before the events of the television series, with Cara Gee reprising the role. Telltale says it was designed as an entry point for people unfamiliar with the franchise; viewers who know the show may recognize more references. The developers said the adaptation drew primarily on the television series, while the team also read the books and novellas. Telltale’s FAQ and its June 2023 developer Q&A describe that approach.
It is not only a sequence of conversations and decisions. You explore ship sections and wrecks in zero gravity, use mag boots to walk on walls and ceilings, inspect objects, and speak with the crew. Telltale also describes light zero-g puzzles and quick-time events. Finding items and making discoveries can build rapport with crew members and affect outcomes, making exploration part of the narrative system rather than just a way to move between scenes.
Do choices matter?
According to Telltale, both discoveries and dialogue choices can open different story paths. Its FAQ describes possible outcomes in which all but one crew member survive—or all but one die. Game director Stephan Frost said in the developer Q&A that Drummer has to reach the same general destination because this is a prequel, but who survives and how Episode 5 plays can vary.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
That means the choices are consequential without making the story an unrestricted alternate timeline. Telltale’s descriptions support differences in crew survival and some later content; they do not establish that every decision changes Drummer’s ultimate place in the series’ chronology.
What do the reviews say?
The accessible review listings provide a few useful reception signals, but not enough full review text to responsibly summarize specific critical praise or complaints. GameSpot’s review index links Claire Lewis’s review, “Choices That Matter,” and displays a score of 9/10 (“Superb”). The same page displays a Metacritic score of 75. These are scores shown on GameSpot’s page, not a substitute for examining critics’ full arguments. GameSpot’s listing was accessed in 2026.

Steam showed “Mostly Positive,” with 73% of 1,614 English user reviews positive when indexed in 2026. That is a platform snapshot of user reviews, not a critic aggregate, and both the count and percentage can change. Steam’s listing provides the current store context.
For a decision, treat these figures as broad signals that some players and critics responded positively, not as proof of particular qualities such as writing, pacing, or puzzle design. The available review material does not support a detailed verdict on those elements.

No. Telltale describes the game as an on-ramp for newcomers, and the story is a prequel. Familiarity with the television series may make references and character context more rewarding, but it is not presented as a prerequisite. The developers said the adaptation was based primarily on the show, with the books and novellas also informing the team’s work.

What accessibility and language options are documented?
Telltale’s official FAQ lists optional warnings for sudden bright lights, loud noises, and intense action; persistent waypoints; an additional confirmation before major plot choices; adjustable or disabled action-event timers; and color filters. The listed voice audio is English, including some Lang Belta. Subtitles are listed in French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. Check the FAQ and the relevant platform listing for current details: Telltale’s accessibility and language information.
Who is most likely to enjoy it?
The documented design points to a choice-driven adventure for players interested in character relationships and a mix of dialogue with ship exploration. It may suit people who want to spend time investigating environments and interacting with a crew, as well as fans curious about Drummer before the show’s events. Newcomers can follow it without prior viewing, though existing fans may notice more franchise references.
If your decision depends on precise judgments about writing quality, pacing, or the balance between exploration and conversation, the available review evidence here is not detailed enough to settle those questions. The scores provide context, but should not be mistaken for a specific account of what works or falls short.
