Was The Equalizer renewed before the season 4 finale?
Yes. On April 25, 2024, CBS announced that The Equalizer would return for the 2024–2025 broadcast season. The renewal guaranteed a fifth season; it was not an open-ended commitment. CBS’s announcement came before the season-four finale, “Shattered,” which the network had scheduled for May 19, 2024.
CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach praised the series, led by Queen Latifah, for its suspense, heroism, high stakes and characters, and said the network looked forward to another season. Those comments accompanied the renewal announcement.
What did CBS say about The Equalizer’s audience?
In its April 25, 2024 renewal release, CBS reported that the show averaged 7.89 million viewers season-to-date, citing Nielsen Most Current Data, and ranked eighth among primetime broadcast dramas. CBS also said the series reached over 10 million viewers in live-plus-35-day multiplatform viewing. Both figures are historical claims from the 2024 announcement, not current ratings.

What happened in the season 4 finale?
“Shattered” put Mel in danger
CBS scheduled “Shattered,” the tenth and final episode of season four, for Sunday, May 19, 2024. In the episode, McCall’s team races to rescue Mel after she is kidnapped by a member of her veteran support group and his older brother. Meanwhile, Dante is offered a job with the NYPD’s Special Investigation Unit in Los Angeles. CBS credited Joe Gazzam and Rob Hanning as writers and Darren Grant as director. The CBS episode guide lists “Condemned” on May 5 and “The Big Take” on May 12 ahead of the finale.
Season four’s schedule
Season four began February 18, 2024, with “Truth for a Truth” and ran for ten episodes through “Shattered.” The finale’s plot combined a team rescue with a possible career change for Dante, while the season as a whole followed McCall’s investigations and the continuing stories of her family and team.

Was The Equalizer cancelled, or is it coming back for season 6?
The show completed five seasons. CBS’s series page lists five seasons and identifies season-five episode 18, “Decisions,” as airing May 4, 2025. TheWrap reported in May 2025 that CBS cancelled the drama after five seasons and that “Decisions” would serve as the series finale. The cancellation attribution here is to TheWrap; CBS’s episode and series listings independently confirm the five-season run and final episode date.
In a March 20, 2025 finale announcement, CBS described “Decisions”: McCall and Dante are ambushed by Salazar and his army during a romantic getaway; Aunt Vi makes a choice about her relationship with Captain Curtis; and Dee meets an author who may help her pursue her dream university. The episode aired May 4, 2025.

CBS’s 2024 and 2025 announcements named the CBS Television Network and Paramount+ as viewing destinations. Those releases described Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers as able to stream live through their local CBS affiliate and watch on demand, while Paramount+ Essential subscribers could watch on demand the day after broadcast but not live.
