Maupassant’s story sought under the title The Diary of a Madman is Un fou, also published in English as A Madman. A verified Hindi translation or edition could not be identified from the available publication records, so readers should not assume that an English listing is a Hindi version.
Which Maupassant story is called The Diary of a Madman?
The title refers to Guy de Maupassant’s French short story Un fou. English titles for the same story include The Diary of a Madman and A Madman. A title alone can be misleading: other authors, including Nikolai Gogol, Lu Xun, and Leo Tolstoy, have works known by similar English titles.
Maupassant’s Le Horla is a separate story, not another title for Un fou. The shared association with a troubled narrator and diary-like form can cause confusion, so check the French title and author when identifying a particular text.
Is there a verified Hindi translation?
No reliable publisher or catalog record identified in the available sources confirms a Hindi translation of Maupassant’s Un fou or names its Hindi translator. Before buying or citing a purported Hindi edition, check the book’s language, translator, publisher, and title page. A product page that uses the English title is not enough to establish that the text is in Hindi.
Where can you read the story in English?
Project Gutenberg’s Original Short Stories — Volume 11 includes an English text of the story. The collection metadata credits multiple translators for the volume, including A. E. Henderson and Albert M. C. McMaster, but does not identify which translator handled this individual story. Treat it as a free English reference, not as a Hindi edition.

A reference guide also records an English collection titled The Diary of a Madman and Other Tales of Horror, translated by Arnold Kellett and published in 1976, with later retitlings. That record documents an English-language collection; it does not verify a Hindi edition or current stock.
What is the story about?
The English text opens with the death and funeral of a respected senior magistrate. A document among his papers then discloses a private account of violence and moral collapse, sharply contrasting with the respectable public life people believed he led. This summary concerns Un fou, not Le Horla or the 1963 film that shares the English title Diary of a Madman.

When was Un fou first published?
The available secondary sources disagree, and a definitive first-publication date should not be repeated as settled fact. One bibliography lists Un Fou (1886); other accounts point to Le Gaulois on September 2, 1885, or Gil Blas in October 1886. Resolving the discrepancy would require checking a primary French newspaper issue or a scholarly critical edition.
