He also acknowledged that the new cast and crew may have meant well. The comments were about more than the remake’s box-office performance.
What Alex Proyas said about the new Crow
In March 2024, as the remake drew backlash, Proyas wrote on Facebook that The Crow was “not just a movie.” Brandon Lee died while making the 1994 film, which was completed after his death. Proyas called the film “a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss” and said, “It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.” TheWrap reported his post.
That post was not simply a denunciation of the people making the new film. Proyas said he took no joy in negativity about fellow filmmakers and believed the cast and crew had good intentions. He added that the fans’ response “speaks volumes.” His objection centered on returning to a film he saw as inseparable from Lee’s death and legacy, even as he recognized the new filmmakers’ intentions.
Why he called it a “cynical cash-grab”
After the 2024 film opened in August, Proyas posted: “I thought the remake was a cynical cash-grab. Not much cash to grab it seems.” The Independent reported the comment on August 28, 2024, alongside an opening of $4.6 million in the US and a reported $50 million production budget. Those were contemporaneous reported figures, not final worldwide grosses or a complete accounting of costs; they do not by themselves establish the film’s eventual profitability. The Independent’s report gives the context for the jab.

How Rupert Sanders explained his version
Director Rupert Sanders presented the 2024 film as a fresh adaptation of James O’Barr’s comic, not a recreation of Proyas’s movie. He said he did not revisit the original while developing his approach and told Fangoria, “I adapted the source material, I didn’t copy it frame for frame, that didn’t interest me.” Fangoria’s interview records his explanation.
Sanders also described changing Shelly’s place in the story. He said she had been more of a silhouette in the 1990s film, whereas in his version she was “the emotional engine of the film.” The newer story, he explained, gives Eric the possibility of bringing her back. That is Sanders’s account of the film’s aims and emotional premise, rather than a neutral verdict on whether the changes work.

Both films draw on the same comic
The 1994 and 2024 films are both based on James O’Barr’s 1989 comic series, as Louder reported. That shared source helps clarify the disagreement: Proyas framed his response around what the original film means because of Lee’s death, while Sanders described returning to O’Barr’s material to make a different adaptation. Their comments reveal competing ideas about what a new The Crow should preserve—the legacy of the 1994 film or the freedom to reinterpret the comic.
