The best Survivor Series matches turn eliminations into story: rivalries shape the teams, each exit changes the odds, and the final survivors have something meaningful at stake. This subjective ranking weighs historical importance, stakes, match structure and pacing, memorable performances, and how well each bout uses the elimination format. It includes four traditional team matches and one landmark specialty match—the 2002 Elimination Chamber—because Survivor Series has hosted important classics beyond its signature format.
How Survivor Series became an elimination-match showcase
Survivor Series began in 1987 as a Thanksgiving-night event. WWE’s history of the show describes its launch as counterprogramming against the NWA’s Starrcade. The traditional format brought four- or five-person crews together, with wrestlers eliminated during the match; WWE has described those bouts as a longtime centerpiece of the event. WWE’s history of Survivor Series and its retrospective on traditional elimination matches provide useful context, though the latter is WWE’s own editorial selection rather than an impartial or exhaustive consensus.
The best WWE Survivor Series classics, ranked
1. WWE vs. The Alliance (2001)
The Rock, Chris Jericho, Big Show, Kane and The Undertaker vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Shane McMahon, Booker T and Rob Van Dam
This match makes the top spot because its elimination structure carried an unusually clear consequence: WWE’s retrospective describes it as a winner-take-all contest, with the losing side to go out of business. The teams represented WWE and The Alliance, making every elimination part of the larger invasion storyline rather than simply a step toward a survivor tally. The Rock emerged as the sole survivor. It is the strongest pick here for viewers who want team-match drama tied to an event-level outcome. WWE records the result in its Survivor Series results archive.

2. Hulk Hogan’s team vs. Andre the Giant’s team (1987)
Hulk Hogan, Bam Bam Bigelow, Don Muraco, Paul Orndorff and Ken Patera vs. Andre the Giant, King Kong Bundy, Butch Reed, One Man Gang and Rick Rude
The inaugural event’s main event had a ready-made hook: the possibility of another Hogan–Andre encounter after their WrestleMania III meeting. WWE’s account describes a late 2-on-3 stretch and Hogan being counted out after pursuing the interfering Bundy and One Man Gang; Bam Bam Bigelow then eliminated both men. That ending gives the match a memorable reversal of focus, with Bigelow taking over after Hogan’s exit. Its historical place in the first Survivor Series makes it essential viewing even for fans who prefer later, more elaborate team stories. See WWE’s official 1987 event page and traditional-match retrospective.

3. The Million Dollar Team vs. The Dream Team (1990)
Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Team vs. The Dream Team
The match is best remembered for The Undertaker’s debut as a mystery partner on DiBiase’s team. WWE’s retrospective says he eliminated Koko B. Ware and Dusty Rhodes before being counted out, leaving the match to continue without its most startling arrival. Bret Hart and DiBiase became the closing focus. That unusual shape—an instantly consequential debut followed by an exit that does not end the bout—makes this a better watch for character and historical significance than for a simple march toward a final survivor. WWE recounts the sequence in its traditional-match retrospective.

4. The 20-person elimination tag match (1988)
The 1988 card’s 20-person traditional tag match stands out for scale and roster combinations. WWE notes that Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart and British Bulldog were on the same team, alongside their respective partners. Its unusual rule structure also made the match a battle of attrition: eliminating one member eliminated that wrestler’s partner as well. That partner-linked rule gives the eliminations a different rhythm from a standard team match, where each wrestler is removed individually. Choose it for a broad snapshot of the roster and an uncommon variation on the format. WWE discusses the match in its Survivor Series history feature and match retrospective.
5. Shawn Michaels vs. five opponents in the 2002 Elimination Chamber
Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, Chris Jericho and Kane

This is the ranking’s deliberate exception to the traditional team format. The 2002 Elimination Chamber was a specialty match, not a Survivor Series team elimination bout, but it belongs in a guide to the event’s classics as a format landmark. WWE’s results archive lists Michaels as the winner and new World Heavyweight Champion. It is the choice for viewers interested in a different kind of elimination match and a championship consequence rather than team survival. The result appears in WWE’s event archive.
