Guests pay to charter the yacht, according to the show’s producers. Those details point to real financial stakes and a working yacht setting—but they do not prove that every scene is spontaneous or untouched by production.
How Below Deck crew members are paid
The clearest public description comes from Jill Goslicky, executive producer of Below Deck Sailing Yacht. In a 2021 Bravo report, she said crew members receive a salary for their yacht jobs, keep their tips and also receive a production fee. Goslicky added that guests pay for their vacations. Bravo’s account of her comments describes the three compensation components, but does not disclose the production fee or a current salary schedule.
A Bravo spokesperson told The New York Times, as reported in 2020, that “most” cast members’ pay is “roughly the same as they would make doing their same job on a similar sized boat.” That is an attributed comparison, not an independently audited figure or a role-by-role breakdown. It also does not clarify how a production fee affects the total cast compensation. The Times report does not establish current pay amounts.
What the reported tip figures mean
Tips are separate from base yacht-job pay, and reported figures vary by charter length and by whom the total is divided among. In a 2019 interview, former chief stewardess Kate Chastain said a good tip on a yacht of that size would be $5,000 per person for seven days. She described the shorter charters shown on the program as producing roughly $2,000–$2,500 per person when prorated. Those are Chastain’s historical estimates, not a current universal rate. Entertainment Tonight’s 2019 interview also gives reported seasonal salary estimates by role, but they are secondary estimates rather than an official Bravo pay schedule.

A 2020 New York Times story put an average tip at around $20,000, divided evenly among all boat crew, including off-camera engineers. That figure is not necessarily what each on-camera cast member takes home, and it is not a current average. The Times’ reporting does not provide a current, comparable breakdown of salary, tips and production fees.
Are the guests really paying to charter the yacht?
Producers have said they are. Executive producer Mark Cronin said guests “spend their real money to be on the show,” according to Bravo. Bravo also reported that guests on Below Deck Sailing Yacht were actual paying guests and that “The tip money is real.” These are statements reported by the network, rather than an independent audit of guest payments. Bravo’s report on Cronin’s account and its coverage of Sailing Yacht guests provide the details.

Bravo’s account also says guests can ask not to do something on camera or not to be mic’d. That illustrates that filming has boundaries and arrangements; it does not, by itself, reveal how frequently those requests are made or how they shape the episodes.

Producer Courtland Cox described the production as filming “what’s happening on a working charter yacht with people that are working on the yacht.” His account supports the idea that the show is built around real yacht work, while remaining a producer’s description of the process. Bravo’s interview with Cox does not independently verify how scenes are selected or edited.

Real jobs, guest spending, tips and production fees can all coexist with reality-TV production. Pay evidence makes the show’s economic setting more credible: crew members have yacht roles, guests pay for charters, and tips have a real financial dimension. But salaries cannot establish whether a particular argument was prompted, how events are ordered in an episode, or how much editing shapes the story.
The careful conclusion is that compensation is a meaningful clue to real occupational and financial stakes, not proof that the series is wholly unscripted. The public reporting cited here does not disclose current contract terms or enough production records to settle how much production influences what viewers see.
