June ends The Handmaid’s Tale by returning to the ruined Waterford home, sitting in the room where she lived as Offred, and starting a recording: “My name is Offred.” The final line circles back to the series premiere and Margaret Atwood’s novel, turning June’s story into a record she chooses to preserve. But the ending does not show her finding Hannah or Gilead’s defeat.
What does “My Name Is Offred” mean?
June’s last words recall the identity imposed on her in Gilead. “Offred” was the name assigned to her as Fred Waterford’s Handmaid; by the finale, she is known as June Osborne. Saying “My name is Offred” as she begins recording is not evidence that she has returned to Gilead or given up her present identity. It brings the name associated with this chapter of her life into the account she is making of it.

The recorder makes the ending a frame for the story viewers have watched: June is preserving her experiences in her own voice. TV Insider reports creator Bruce Miller’s explanation that the history is worth recording because the people in it, especially the women, are worth remembering. The testimony is also a memorial.
Why does the finale go back to the beginning?
The final recorder click deliberately echoes the sound in the series premiere. Miller told TheWrap the circular return was planned, including the moment when Elisabeth Moss looks into the camera and begins to tell the story. TheWrap describes his explanation this way: “The click of a tape recorder is heard, then: ‘My name is Offred.’”

The closing line also invokes the opening of Atwood’s 1985 novel. The Independent identifies the passage as the novel’s first page, and TV Guide describes the scene as a return to its first chapter. The series has continued beyond the book’s original narrative, so this is a deliberate echo—not a claim that the television story simply repeats the novel’s entire ending.
How does The Handmaid’s Tale end for June and the others?
Mayday’s operation succeeds and Boston is liberated. June reunites with her mother, Holly, and daughter, Nichole. She leaves Nichole with Holly and sets out to search for Hannah, who is still in Gilead. June and Luke part for now but remain committed to resistance.
Rank #2
- Janine is reunited with Charlotte after Aunt Lydia and Naomi help bring her to Boston.
- Emily returns and reconnects with June.
- Serena heads to a refugee camp with baby Noah after June accepts her apology.
- The finale confirms Nick’s death.
These outcomes resolve important character threads, but they do not mean every conflict is over. The finale does not show June rescuing Hannah or Gilead being fully defeated.
Did June find Hannah?
No. June leaves Nichole in Holly’s care to pursue Hannah, who remains in Gilead. The finale ends before that search reaches a resolution; it does not show a reunion.

Does June reunite with Luke?
No reunion is shown. June and Luke part ways for now, while both remain committed to the resistance. The ending leaves their future together open.
What does the dream sequence mean?
June’s imagined life without Gilead, including a karaoke performance of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” offers emotional contrast rather than a change in the plot. It shows the ordinary, happier lives she imagines for herself and her friends—and what the resistance is trying to reclaim.

Does The Testaments continue June’s story?
The Testaments is Atwood’s 2019 sequel novel and a separate continuation in the wider fictional world. Reporting describes it as the basis for a television continuation, with a focus on Aunt Lydia and Gilead’s daughters. It is not a missing final scene from The Handmaid’s Tale: the finale itself does not show June finding Hannah. That distinction matters when looking for answers to the cliffhanger; the ending leaves June’s search unresolved.
