The headline describes what happens in the trailer, not a verified audience consensus: Lara’s allies and enemies repeatedly warn, reproach, and judge her while she says very little. The trailer promoted Netflix’s animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which premiered in October 2024.
Why does the trailer seem to criticize Lara?
In Gordon Jackson’s August 19, 2024, Gizmodo coverage, the striking feature is the imbalance in the dialogue: Hayley Atwell’s Lara offers brief exclamations, while people around her deliver warnings and judgments. One tells her, “This is the life you’ve chosen. Don’t make the same mistakes he did.” Another says, “Sometimes I swear you have a death wish.” The villain begins, “We are the same, Ms. Croft…”
Jackson reads the accumulation of those lines as oppressive, as though Lara is being defined by the people criticizing or cautioning her. The trailer’s dialogue can support that interpretation, but it is not evidence that viewers broadly—or unanimously—disliked Lara. No audience-reaction statistic is established in the cited coverage.
What is the series about?
The series follows the events of the Survivor game storyline. After a thief steals a dangerous Chinese artifact from Croft Manor, Lara pursues it around the world and into forgotten tombs. The premise also sets up a personal conflict: Lara must confront her identity and decide what kind of hero she wants to become. Atwell voices Lara Croft.

- Made in partnership with Crystal Dynamics
- Meticulously crafted statue captures Lara with fierce determination and character
- Measures 9.2” tall, 9.4”wide, and 6.3” deep
- Includes swappable arms with pistol and climbing axe
The trailer’s warnings and the villain’s claim that Lara is like them make that question of identity part of the promotional story, but they do not establish exactly how the series resolves it.
Which games provide the backstory?
T3 identifies the Survivor trilogy that precedes the series as these three games:
Rank #2
- Dark Horse presents Lara Croft (Survivor Era) from Tomb Raider as a PVC Statue
- Measures approximately 11 inches tall
- Stands on a rugged rock base (8.4 inch wide by 10 inch deep)
- Lara is equipped for survival, with her bow, climbing axe, and torch
- Tomb Raider (2013)
- Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015)
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018)
That sequence is the relevant companion context if you want to follow the continuity. T3’s June 4, 2024, trailer coverage names the trilogy; it does not establish current platform availability, editions, or prices. Check those details for your region before buying.

No. The headline refers to a trailer discussed in August 2024, not a newly released trailer. Its October 10 premiere date was still in the future when Gizmodo published, but has since passed. Rotten Tomatoes’ season-one listing identifies the series as an October 2024 action-animation release and names Netflix as its service. Availability can vary by region.
