This editorial shortlist weighs moral ambiguity, voice, character evolution, story impact, and methods that conventional heroes would reject. Red Hood and John Constantine are among the clearest fits; Deathstroke is a more contested, villain-adjacent choice. A character’s alignment can shift between stories and creative eras.
How to judge a DC anti-hero
An anti-hero is not simply a hero who is rude or troubled. The useful distinction is whether a character’s goals can be protective or beneficial while their methods, motives, or loyalties depart from conventional heroism. The candidates below are considered by how much they act for others versus themselves, what lines they cross, how stable their moral code is, and whether a defining story makes that tension central.
This is an editorial selection, not an official DC order or a claim of critical consensus. Some entries fit the label only in particular stories or periods.
Ten DC anti-heroes and boundary cases to consider
1. Red Hood (Jason Todd)
Red Hood is one of DC’s clearest anti-hero examples: Jason Todd’s return after being killed by the Joker leads him into direct conflict with Batman over lethal methods. DC’s Batman history identifies his 2004 arrival in “Under the Hood,” where he targets Black Mask with lethal force and is revealed as Jason Todd. DC’s Red Hood profile describes a later effort to manage his rage without continuing a body count, making his evolution as important as his violence.

For a story that establishes the character’s central conflict, start with “Under the Hood.” DC’s Batman history confirms the storyline and reveal; the exact title, contents, format, and availability of any collected edition should be checked in the DC Comics catalog.
2. John Constantine
Constantine brings a different kind of moral ambiguity. DC describes him as an occult expert and investigator, but also a con man and grifter with a gray moral compass. His motives can be suspect even when he ultimately wants to do right. That mix of manipulation, self-interest, and reluctant good intentions makes him a strong anti-hero fit without making him a straightforward villain. See DC’s John Constantine profile.

3. Deathstroke (Slade Wilson)
Deathstroke is a boundary case rather than an uncomplicated hero. DC says Slade Wilson has sometimes helped heroes or government in pursuit of what he considers a greater good, but usually puts himself first and rationalizes manipulation and betrayal. Those occasional alliances do not cancel out his mercenary self-interest; they are precisely why the anti-hero label needs qualification. DC’s Deathstroke profile lays out that tension.
4. Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn is a plausible candidate, but the label depends on the story era. A character’s history can move between villainy, comic anti-villainy, and more protective or heroic behavior; treating every appearance as one stable moral identity would flatten those differences. Her inclusion here is therefore a prompt to assess a specific run, not a claim that she is consistently an anti-hero. DC’s official profile is a starting point for checking her current characterization.

5. Catwoman (Selina Kyle)
Catwoman’s criminal methods and self-interest can put her in anti-hero territory when a story also gives her protective motives or a meaningful code. That balance is not identical across her appearances, so a particular run matters more than a blanket label. Consult DC’s official profile alongside the story being considered.
6. Lobo
Lobo is the most deliberately difficult fit on this shortlist. A violent bounty hunter may act against a larger threat in one story and remain closer to a villain or anti-villain in another. Calling him an anti-hero without naming the version or story risks confusing a temporary alliance with a consistent moral commitment. DC’s official profile provides a place to begin that comparison.

7–10. Why there is no responsible filler list
A ten-name title can suggest a definitive top ten, but the evidence for several familiar possibilities does not establish which versions belong here or why. Black Adam, Peacemaker, Poison Ivy, and Deadshot are possible candidates for story-specific analysis, not automatic additions. Ranking them as settled choices without checking character-specific material would make the list sound more certain than it is.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why these rankings change by story
DC characters appear across continuities and under different writers. A mercenary’s temporary alliance, a thief’s act of protection, or a villain’s change of direction may support an anti-hero reading in one story without defining every appearance. The strongest comparisons therefore name the era or run and look at the same questions: who benefits from the character’s actions, which methods cross a conventional hero’s line, how durable the character’s code is, and whether the story makes that conflict consequential.
