Terry Crews is widely recognized as an actor and host, but his path to television ran through art school, college and professional football, portrait work, and an unexpected courtroom assignment. These 10 facts trace those less familiar chapters using both reported career history and Crews’s own recollections.
Art and football shaped his early career
1. He studied art before and during football
Crews attended a six-week program at Interlochen after high school, then studied at Western Michigan University on an Art Excellence Scholarship. He walked onto the university’s football team and later earned an athletic scholarship. Art was part of his education while he was also pursuing football, not simply a later sideline. NPR Illinois and Biography.com recount his studies and athletic path.

2. His college team won a conference championship
Crews played on Western Michigan’s team when it won the 1988 Mid-American Conference championship, and he earned All-Conference honors, according to NPR Illinois. That college success led into a much less settled professional career.
3. His NFL career was a series of opportunities, not a long uninterrupted run
The Los Angeles Rams drafted Crews in 1991. He went on to play for several teams and spent a season with the Rhein Fire in Germany. NPR Illinois describes three NFL seasons spread over seven years; that refers to seasons played across a longer stretch of his football career, rather than seven consecutive NFL seasons. NPR Illinois and Biography.com provide the career accounts.
#1 Best Overall
Crews recalled the instability in unusually plain terms: “My NFL career was not glamorous at all,” he told NPR Illinois, comparing it to being “a roadie in a band that was kinda never going anywhere.”
4. He painted portraits to earn money during his football years
While living out of suitcases during that period, Crews offered to paint portraits of teammates. Biography.com also reports that he created NFL-licensed lithographs. The combination of art and football was practical as well as personal: he used his skills to make money while navigating an uncertain playing career. NPR Illinois and Biography.com describe this work.

5. He played the flute for years
In an interview with NPR Illinois, Crews said he played flute for seven or eight years. He joked: “I played the flute for seven or eight years. It’s my own blaxploitation movie.” The length of study is his recollection, rather than an independently documented lesson history. NPR Illinois
6. He once worked as a courtroom sketch artist
Crews recalled that a sketch artist was unavailable for a major Flint, Michigan, court case, giving him a chance to draw in court. He described the moment this way: “The biggest court case in Flint, Michigan history and the sketch artist couldn’t make it… It was my first job in entertainment, actually.” That is Crews’s account of the assignment. 7. A friend brought him to his first acting audition
Crews’s first acting opportunity came through a friend who brought him to an audition for Battle Dome, a televised competition show. He got the job. The casting opportunity followed work outside acting, including security work around film sets, rather than a conventional straight path from auditions to a first role. NPR Illinois

9. He designed furniture and illustrated a children’s book
The same SAG-AFTRA Foundation profile describes a furniture collection Crews designed with Bernhardt Designs and his illustrations for Come Find Me, a children’s book co-created with former teammate Ken Harvey. These are historical creative projects, not claims about current furniture availability.
10. His books examine vulnerability and his idea of toughness
Crews published the memoir Manhood in 2014, according to Biography.com. In a 2022 interview about Tough: My Journey to True Power, published by Portfolio/Penguin Random House in April of that year, he reflected on how he had understood toughness: “One thing I discovered in writing this book is that my definition of toughness was ‘cold.’ It was the ability to shut emotion off.” His books and interviews offer his own perspective on vulnerability and masculinity; they are not a basis for broader clinical claims.
