At Tenacious D’s July 14, 2024, concert in Sydney, Jack Black sang “Happy Birthday” to Gass and invited him to make a wish. Gass replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time.” The remark came one day after a gunman attempted to shoot Donald Trump at a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was injured, and a rally attendee was killed.

Gass later apologized, describing the line as improvised and saying it was inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake. He said, “I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone,” and called the shooting attempt a tragedy.
Why Tenacious D canceled the tour
On July 16, Black said the comment had blindsided him and that he no longer felt it was appropriate to continue the tour. He also put all future creative plans on hold. Black said, “I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form.”

The immediate consequence was the cancellation of the remaining dates, though contemporaneous reports described the itinerary’s scope differently. ABC News reported that the Newcastle show was postponed shortly before doors were due to open and that planned Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide shows would not go ahead. Pitchfork described the remaining Australia and New Zealand dates as canceled. The distinction matters: Newcastle was reported as postponed, while the other listed Australian performances were not going ahead.
What happened after the announcement
Australian Senator Ralph Babet called for the duo to be removed from Australia and for their visas to be revoked. That was a public demand by a senator; the cited contemporary reports do not establish that the band was deported or that the Australian government ordered the tour canceled.

Is Tenacious D getting back together?
In January 2026, reports by Louder and MusicRadar, drawing on a Rolling Stone interview with Gass, said he and Black had talked through their disagreement. Gass described the relationship as “like a marriage” and said, “We hashed it out. It was hard.” He also said he expected Tenacious D to return.
That is Gass’s stated expectation, not a confirmed tour announcement. The sources available do not provide a return date, itinerary or formal schedule from the band.
