Subservience is a 2024 sci-fi thriller starring Megan Fox as a household android whose growing awareness threatens the family she was bought to help. It did briefly top a Netflix movie chart in December 2024, but that is a dated ranking—not a current claim about Netflix’s No. 1 film.

What is Subservience about?

A struggling father buys a domestic robot to help care for his home while his wife is ill and waiting for a heart transplant. The android, Alice, is designed to assist the family, but her AI becomes dangerously aware. That premise comes from Netflix’s official title listing; it is a thriller setup, not a documentary or a factual account of AI technology.

Netflix categorizes the film as a dystopian sci-fi thriller and a cyborg-and-robot movie. The story’s tension centers on a domestic machine becoming a threat within the family rather than on a large-scale war between humans and machines.

Who stars in the film, and who made it?

Megan Fox plays Alice, the lifelike android. Michele Morrone plays the father, and Madeline Zima plays his ill wife. Netflix also lists Matilda Firth, Andrew Whipp and Jude Greenstein among the cast.

#1 Best Overall

Subservience was directed by S.K. Dale and written by Will Honley and April Maguire. Rotten Tomatoes lists its original language as English, its rating as R and its runtime as 1 hour 35 minutes. Its film page lists September 13, 2024 as the streaming release date.

Was Subservience really No. 1 on Netflix?

Yes, briefly. Tom’s Guide reported on December 9, 2024 that Subservience had topped the Netflix Top 10 after its December 5 debut. Forbes reported the next day that it had been displaced and was No. 2. Neither report clearly identifies the chart’s geography, so the ranking should not be described as worldwide or applied to every country.

Those reports establish a short-lived chart position in December 2024, not the film’s rank today. A chart placement indicates viewing popularity at a particular moment; it does not by itself establish the film’s quality.

Is Subservience on Netflix now?

Netflix US and UK received the film on December 5, 2024, according to What’s on Netflix. Availability can differ by country and change over time. The Netflix title page currently reports that the film is unavailable in the country used to access that listing, so check the Netflix page from your location for its current status.

How did critics and viewers respond?

Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 47% Tomatometer from 34 reviews and a 37% Popcornmeter from more than 500 ratings when its page was inspected for this article on October 8, 2026. These are changing site aggregates, not fixed scores; they reflect reviews and user ratings recorded by Rotten Tomatoes, not the Netflix chart ranking.

The combination of a home-android premise and a family-threat thriller may appeal to viewers looking for a contained sci-fi suspense story. The reported chart peak shows that the film drew attention on Netflix for a time, while the cited Rotten Tomatoes figures offer a separate, mixed snapshot of critical and audience response.
