Stolen is a tense Hindi thriller about two brothers drawn into a child abduction they did not commit—and the suspicion and violence that follow. Nandini Ramnath’s review praises its immersive atmosphere and performances, while acknowledging occasional contrivances. For viewers drawn to tightly wound social thrillers, it sounds worth watching; those who need every plot turn to feel plausible may be less persuaded.
What is Stolen about?
At a remote train station, Gautam (Abhishek Banerjee) arrives to meet his younger brother Raman (Shubham Vardhan). As Raman steps off the train, five-month-old Champa is snatched from her mother, Jhumpa (Mia Maelzer). Raman is wrongly accused of taking the baby, and the brothers are caught between a desperate mother, suspicious police and vigilante crowds.
The review describes the 92-minute film as unfolding over one night and the following day. Its urgency comes from the brothers’ attempt to get through a volatile situation in which accusation can turn into danger before the truth is established.
Does the thriller work?
Tension and atmosphere
Ramnath calls the film tightly constructed and immersive. Her review emphasizes frenetic action, disturbing imagery and hostile open roads; the open-air setting becomes a trap rather than an escape. The result, in her account, is a nerve-shredding ride whose tension is rooted in the characters’ exposure to suspicion and mob violence.

Performances and craft
The review praises the ensemble, singling out Shubham Vardhan as especially compelling. It also highlights Isshaan Ghosh’s cinematography and Shreyas Beltangdy’s editing as part of the film’s momentum. Harish Khanna plays Panditji, the policeman leading the officers. Ramnath does note occasional contrivances, so the film’s force does not depend on every turn feeling entirely natural.
What real event inspired the story?
Director Karan Tejpal told Scroll that the project began as a 30-page treatment inspired by a 2018 incident in Karbi Anglong, Assam, in which two men—a musician and a businessman—were falsely accused of being child kidnappers and beaten to death by a mob. Ramnath’s review also identifies that lynching as the film’s inspiration. Stolen is a fictional thriller, not a documentary reconstruction of the incident.

What themes does the film explore?
Tejpal describes the film as being about trust and conscience: “The film does talk about the perils of having a conscience. That said, the film is about trust too. Without trust, civilisation would be nowhere, and none of our systems would work.” He has also said he did not want to make a nihilistic film.
The review reads the story through class and urban privilege: the brothers’ position shapes how they move through the crisis, while Jhumpa’s poverty affects how others regard her. It also sees the film as questioning empathy and trust in law enforcement outside cities. Those are the reviewer’s interpretations. Tejpal, for his part, framed the film as an encounter between his own privileged background and the wider country.

How does the film create its claustrophobic feel?
Tejpal said he wanted viewers to experience events alongside the protagonists and described the intended effect as somewhat like “a social horror.” In his interview, he said 90% of the film was shot with 25mm and 35mm lenses; wide angles and long takes were intended to create immediacy and claustrophobia. These are the director’s account of the filmmaking approach, rather than a guarantee that every viewer will experience the same effect.
Where can you watch Stolen?
At release, the film was reported as streaming on Prime Video from June 4, 2025: Scroll’s review said it was out on the service, and Tejpal gave that date in a May 29 interview. Release and production details
Stolen is a 2025 Hindi action thriller directed by Karan Tejpal, starring Shubham Vardhan, Abhishek Banerjee, Mia Maelzer, Harish Khanna and Sahidur Rahaman. Tejpal said it premiered at the Mumbai Film Festival in 2023 and later appeared at the Venice Film Festival in August 2023. He also said principal photography began in January 2023, lasted 26 days and took place near Pushkar, Rajasthan; the story itself is not set in Rajasthan.
