Stone Cold Steve Austin coined “Austin 3:16” after beating Jake “The Snake” Roberts in the final of the 1996 King of the Ring tournament. In the promo that followed, he adapted the biblical reference John 3:16, which Roberts had invoked, into a taunt: “Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!” WWE dates the tournament win and the catchphrase’s arrival to June 23, 1996.
What happened at King of the Ring in 1996?
Austin defeated Roberts in the tournament final. WWE’s biography describes the post-match promo as the moment that heralded the Austin 3:16 era. The company’s retrospective page for Austin 3:16 Day gives the date as June 23, 1996, and reproduces the line as “Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!”
WWE’s biography of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin recounts the tournament victory and the phrase’s emergence. Its Austin 3:16 Day page supplies the date and familiar wording.
Why did Austin say “3:16”?
In a WWE interview, Austin traced the number to Roberts’ reference to John 3:16. Austin recalled that he was getting his lip stitched after his match with Marc Mero when he heard Roberts had mentioned the verse in an interview. He remembered seeing fans display John 3:16 signs at football games; after winning the tournament, he said, the new phrase came to him spontaneously.

“So it was pretty famous quote to begin with, and after I won the tournament it just came to me on the fly,” Austin said. He later called the outcome “pure luck.” His account presents the catchphrase as an improvised adaptation, not a prewritten slogan. Read Austin’s recollection in WWE’s interview.
What did “Austin 3:16” become?
The line turned the biblical allusion into a blunt wrestling boast aimed at Roberts: Austin had beaten him, and the phrase gave the victory a memorable verbal stamp.
