How was the tree chosen?
A photograph of the spruce reached Erik Pauze, Rockefeller Center’s head gardener, through a security supervisor. Pauze visited the Russ family, selected the tree, and returned to care for it before it was cut. Rockefeller Center says Pauze has scouted trees for the center for more than three decades.
Pauze described his ideal as “a tree you’d want in your living room, but on a grander scale.” It also “needs to make people smile the second they see it.” For donor Judy Russ, giving the tree was personal: “Donating the tree is a way to honor my late husband Dan and all our family members who have passed,” she said.

How did it reach Rockefeller Center?
The tree was cut on November 6, 2025, and arrived in Manhattan on November 8 aboard a flatbed truck. Rockefeller Center reported that it weighed 11 tons and traveled roughly 150 miles. Its earlier selection announcement described a planned 130-mile route; the arrival report gives the approximate distance of the completed trip. The arrival report also described the planned display: more than 50,000 multicolored LED lights and a 900-pound Swarovski star.
When was it lit, and when did it come down?
The lighting ceremony took place on December 3, 2025. Rockefeller Center’s current holidays page says the tree came down on Saturday, January 10, 2026, so it is no longer on display. Check Rockefeller Center’s holidays page for current seasonal information.

What happens to the tree after the holidays?
Rockefeller Center says lumber from its annual Christmas trees has been donated to Habitat for Humanity since 2007. The wood is milled into beams for homes. The tree’s journey therefore continues after the lights are removed, as its timber becomes part of a different kind of shelter. Rockefeller Center’s account of the lumber donation explains the program.
