What are the best movies of the ’80s? This ranked list covers standout films released from 1980 through 1989, balancing filmmaking craft, critical recognition, influence and staying power, accessibility, and variety. “Best” is an editorial judgment, not an official title: there is no definitive ranking of the decade, and these picks range beyond Hollywood hits to include international cinema and several genres.
How this ranking works
Lists from the American Film Institute focus on categories such as American films, thrills, laughs, passions, and movie quotes; they do not offer a single ranking of world cinema from the 1980s. A separate aggregation of 31 lists is one useful comparison, not a universal verdict: it places Raging Bull, Do the Right Thing, Amadeus, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Platoon in its first five. The Week’s 2026 selection offers another editorial check, balancing blockbusters with films better known to cinephiles. The order below is our own.

Eligibility is based on a film’s release year, not the year an award ceremony took place. For example, the Academy Awards ceremony held in 1980 honored films released in 1979.

Do the Right Thing (1989)
Spike Lee turns a hot summer day on a Brooklyn block into an urgent, formally inventive drama about race, community, and anger. Its vivid characters and unresolved tensions keep the film open to argument rather than reducing it to a simple lesson. Criterion lists a two-disc Blu-ray edition for the 1989 film.

Raging Bull (1980)
Martin Scorsese’s black-and-white portrait of boxer Jake LaMotta is as much about self-destruction as it is about the ring. Robert De Niro’s performance and the film’s tightly controlled visual style make its violence feel intimate and consequential.
-
Amadeus (1984)
Miloš Forman’s lavish, playful drama makes a rivalry between composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri into a study of envy, talent, and belief. Its theatrical scale is matched by a lively sense of humor and a memorable score.

Why these picks span the decade
The 1980s film landscape cannot be reduced to one genre or national cinema. A useful list places popular, accessible work alongside films celebrated for their craft and influence, while making room for international titles. Availability varies by country and changes over time, so this list does not imply that any film is currently on a particular streaming service.
