Oppenheimer led the 2024 Oscar winners
The Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on March 10, 2024, honoring films released in 2023. Oppenheimer won Best Picture and collected seven awards, ABC reported. Christopher Nolan won for directing, and Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. won the leading and supporting actor awards, respectively. The Academy’s 2024 ceremony archive records the winners.

“I’m Just Ken” became the night’s big musical set piece
Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson performed “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie, with the Academy’s official highlights listing the performance. The Associated Press described Gosling starting in the audience before joining Ronson and a group of dancing Kens onstage. Guitarist Slash appeared during the number, and Gosling shared his microphone with Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, and America Ferrera. The performance delivered a deliberately playful contrast to the ceremony’s more solemn speeches.

Mstyslav Chernov spoke about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
Accepting Documentary Feature for 20 Days in Mariupol, director Mstyslav Chernov said, “I wish I could exchange this for Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities.” He also reflected on the role of film and history: “Cinema forms memories, and memories form history,” as TIME’s ceremony recap transcribed.

Jonathan Glazer connected his film to Gaza
Accepting International Feature Film for The Zone of Interest, Jonathan Glazer spoke about the film’s depiction of dehumanization and connected it to the ongoing bombardment of Gaza. TIME quoted him saying, “Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst,” before referring to “Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation.” His remarks tied the film’s historical subject to a current conflict.
Emma Stone’s win surprised some observers
Emma Stone won Actress in a Leading Role for Poor Things. TIME reported that she appeared stunned when Michelle Yeoh announced her name, and noted that Lily Gladstone had emerged as a favorite among some observers. That makes Stone’s victory a surprise in the context of the race, not a result that everyone had considered impossible.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph opened the awards with an emotional win
Da’Vine Joy Randolph won Actress in a Supporting Role for The Holdovers, the first award presented that night. TIME described her acceptance speech as emotional, with Randolph reflecting on how far she had come and how hard she had worked. The Academy’s archive confirms the award.

Presenting Best Picture, Al Pacino skipped the customary nominee-by-nominee buildup and announced Oppenheimer. TIME recorded his closing line as, “And my eyes see Oppenheimer?” The abbreviated delivery made the final announcement an unusually awkward, memorable beat in a ceremony otherwise built around spectacle and speeches.
