No—the BBC has not announced that Doctor Who is cancelled. It did cancel the previously announced 2026 Christmas special. The BBC says the programme remains important to it and has invited production companies to tender for a future series, but the tender is not itself a commission, and its outcome had not been established as of 8 October 2026.
What the BBC cancelled—and what it did not
On 10 June 2026, the BBC said it, Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf had decided not to proceed with the previously announced Christmas episode. The BBC said it was prioritising Doctor Who’s long-term future rather than using a one-off special to bridge the gap. Read the BBC’s announcement of 10 June 2026.
That announcement cancelled the special, not the programme. The BBC said Doctor Who remained important to it and would go to competitive tender that year. It also said the previously announced Doctor Who animation for CBeebies was in production.
What the tender means for Doctor Who
The BBC’s tender notice, published on 17 September 2026, sought proposals for a multi-episodic series, including specials, intended for transmission in 2028/29. It included an option to extend the contract for a second series. Initial submissions were due by 2pm on 2 October 2026; that deadline had passed by 8 October. A tender is a competitive production process, not confirmation that a company has won or that a new series has been commissioned. The notice does not name a successful bidder. As of 8 October 2026, the cited announcements did not establish the tender’s outcome, a production start, a replacement showrunner, a new Doctor or a specific broadcast date. The 2028/29 window is the notice’s intended transmission period.
Why the Christmas special was expected
On 28 October 2025, the BBC announced that a Christmas 2026 special written by Russell T Davies would follow, while also saying Disney+ would not partner on the next season. The BBC’s June 2026 decision reversed the plan for that special; the 2025 announcement should not be read as evidence that it is still going ahead. Read the BBC’s October 2025 announcement.
In that earlier announcement, BBC Director of Drama Lindsay Salt said: “We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.” That was said in October 2025, before the Christmas special was cancelled; it is not a new update on the tender.

- The 2026 Christmas special: cancelled, according to the BBC’s 10 June 2026 statement.
- The live-action series: the BBC says the programme remains important and has put future production out to tender. A winning bidder or completed series order is not established by the cited notice.
- The CBeebies animation: the BBC said on 10 June 2026 that the previously announced animation was in production.
- Distribution and streaming: the BBC says BBC Studios continues to lead global distribution and licensing on its behalf. That does not identify a replacement streaming partner for future live-action episodes. Disney+ was not partnering on the next season, as the BBC said in October 2025.
In July 2026, BBC Director-General Matt Brittin told The Independent: “That’s a show that has regenerated multiple times in its 60-plus year history, and we’ll do so again, and I think that’s one of the great things about the 100-year history of the BBC, we can do that, and we can creatively renew content and shows that people love, and we’ll be working hard on that right now.” This was an interview comment reported by The Independent on 14 July 2026, not a separate BBC commissioning announcement.
