For a story that also opens a window on science, history, music, politics or everyday life, start with one of these 20 full-length documentaries. The list ranges from a 29-minute film to features just over two hours; titles are grouped by subject and viewing mood rather than treated as an objective ranking. Look for the named broadcaster, archive, filmmaker, producer or distributor’s official YouTube upload, and check that it is available in your country.

How to choose a documentary

Use the subject and tone to narrow the list, then check the runtime before you press play. Uploaders matter, too: an official channel is usually the clearest way to identify a film’s source, but a distributor may have licensed rather than produced it. The Thinking Game, for example, was posted by Google DeepMind, the company whose work it covers; treat it as an authorized account, not independent reporting.

Runtimes and uploaders below are those reported in Channel Surfer’s July 2026 guide. They are useful for choosing a film, not a guarantee that the same upload remains accessible. Some PBS/NOVA uploads may be region-restricted.

Science, space and archaeology

Black Hole Apocalypse — 1 hour 53 minutes (2018)

Black Hole Apocalypse follows astrophysicist Janna Levin through an explanation of black holes. The NOVA PBS film suits viewers who want a substantial science feature built around a subject that can be difficult to picture.

Saw: 8-Film Collection - DVD
  • Let the games begin! Own the genre-defining Saw horror series in all its grisly glory. Five-disc set includes: Saw (2004), Saw II (2005), Saw III (2006), Saw IV (2007), Saw V (2008), Saw VI (2009), Saw: The Final Chapter (2010) and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010).
  • Genre: Horror

Ötzi the Iceman — 54 minutes (year not stated)

NOVA PBS turns the discovery of a body preserved in an Alpine glacier into an archaeological mystery. At under an hour, it is a shorter pick for viewers drawn to evidence, investigation and the past.

The Thinking Game — 1 hour 24 minutes (2024)

Google DeepMind’s film offers access to its protein-folding work and the people behind it. Because the company itself posted the documentary, its perspective is part of the viewing context.

Inside Einstein’s Mind — 54 minutes (2015)

This NOVA PBS documentary explores the thought experiments behind general relativity and the theory’s later confirmation. It is a compact choice for viewers interested in physics and how scientific ideas are tested.

History, politics and civil rights

Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance — 1 hour 59 minutes (1993)

Alanis Obomsawin filmed the 1990 Oka standoff from behind Mohawk lines. Released by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), the film is a major work of Indigenous political cinema and a close account of a defining confrontation.

In the Year of the Pig — 1 hour 45 minutes (1968)

Emile de Antonio’s Vietnam War film is a polemic assembled largely from found footage and interviews. The UCLA Film & Television Archive upload is a historically situated argument, not a neutral overview; the film includes graphic footage.

We Were Children — 1 hour 23 minutes (2012)

NFB’s film combines survivors’ testimony about residential schools with dramatized reconstruction of their childhood experiences. Its subject is painful; approach it as testimony about abuse and its effects, rather than casual background viewing.

American Coup: Wilmington 1898 — 1 hour 53 minutes (2024)

American Experience examines the overthrow of Wilmington, North Carolina’s multiracial elected government by white supremacists. It is a focused U.S. history choice for viewers interested in political violence and the destruction of Black political power.

Rocks at Whiskey Trench — 1 hour 46 minutes (2000)

Alanis Obomsawin returns to Oka in this NFB documentary, which includes testimony about an attack on Mohawk women, children and Elders. It pairs naturally with Kanehsatake, while centering a different part of the events and their consequences.

ESSENTIAL FILM COLLECTION
  • The Essential Film Collection - Piano

Forgotten Hero: Walter White and the NAACP — 1 hour 54 minutes (2025)

American Experience follows Walter White’s leadership in the NAACP, his anti-lynching work and legal strategy. Choose it for a biographical route into civil-rights history.

Oppenheimer: The Decision to Drop the Bomb — 1 hour 27 minutes (1965)

This NBC News broadcast features people present in the era of the decision to use the atomic bomb. Its 1965 date is important context: it is a period account, not a newly produced retrospective.

Music, filmmaking and performance

The Last Repair Shop — 40 minutes (2023)

The Los Angeles Times documentary visits a Los Angeles workshop where four workers repair instruments loaned to schoolchildren. It connects music and education through the practical work that helps students keep playing.

Capturing Reality: The Art of Documentary — 1 hour 37 minutes (2008)

NFB brings documentary filmmakers together to discuss how they make films, including questions of staging and responsibility. It is a fitting choice for viewers curious about the craft behind nonfiction storytelling.

The Doors Collection
  • Factory sealed DVD

The Decline of Western Civilization — 1 hour 40 minutes (1981)

Penelope Spheeris documents Los Angeles punk bands and their local scene. The Shout! Studios upload offers a film record of a music community rather than a polished retrospective from a later era.

Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap — 1 hour 52 minutes (2012)

Ice-T interviews rappers about writing and craft in this Shout! Studios documentary. It is a good match for viewers more interested in how artists build lyrics than in a chronological history of the genre.

Hype! — 1 hour 23 minutes (1996)

Shout! Studios’ film looks at Seattle’s music scene and the commercialization surrounding grunge’s rise. It explores the tension between a local culture and the attention that turns it into a marketable story.

Society, work, family and the environment

Griefwalker — 1 hour 10 minutes (2008)

Directed by Tim Wilson, NFB’s Griefwalker follows palliative-care counsellor Stephen Jenkinson. Its focus on care and mortality makes it a more reflective choice than a conventional issue-driven explainer.

The Berlin Rental Rip-Off — 29 minutes (year not stated)

DW Documentary examines Berlin’s furnished short-term rental market and overcrowded housing. At 29 minutes, it is the shortest recommendation here and a direct option for viewers interested in urban housing pressures.

The Plow That Broke the Plains — 29 minutes (1936)

Pare Lorentz’s U.S. National Archives film connects settlement and mechanized farming with the Dust Bowl. Made in 1936, it is itself a historical document as well as a film about environmental change.

Meet the Patels — 1 hour 28 minutes (2014)

FilmRise’s documentary uses Ravi Patel’s family and search for a marriage partner as a comedic premise. It offers a personal, family-centered change of pace from the list’s history and science films.

Where else to find full documentaries on YouTube

Official sources can be good starting points beyond these picks. PBS and ITVS announced a PBS Documentaries YouTube channel in March 2026, intended to centralize public-media nonfiction, including feature-length independent films. FRONTLINE reported that its most-streamed new documentaries of 2025 were available in full and free on YouTube and PBS platforms when that report was published. Catalogs and access can change, so confirm the current upload rather than assuming a film remains available.

YouTube also announced on August 27, 2026, a classroom-content collaboration involving Ken Burns, PBS LearningMedia and the official Ken Burns channel. Initial material centers on The American Revolution and includes free courses and classroom resources. That is a concrete example of documentary material being adapted for structured learning; it does not establish that watching documentaries generally produces measured learning gains.

How to check that a YouTube documentary is legitimate and complete

  1. Open the channel page. Prefer the broadcaster, archive, filmmaker, producer or recognized distributor named with the film. A recognizable channel is a useful provenance check, not proof that its owner produced the documentary.
  2. Read the video description. Check for the director, year, originating broadcaster or distributor, and whether the upload is the full film. If it is split into parts, make sure the parts are clearly labeled and complete.
  3. Check your location. Availability can differ by country. The titles and country access in the cited guide were checked in July 2026, so that snapshot cannot guarantee playback now.
  4. Distinguish the full film from clips or paid versions elsewhere. Confirm the YouTube upload is the complete documentary and that it is free to watch on YouTube before settling in.
