What was the clue that ended Jennings’ streak?
In the Business and Industry category, host Alex Trebek read: “Most of this firm’s 70,000 seasonal white collar employees work only four months a year.” Zerg connected the clue to a CPA friend she could not reach during tax season, then arrived at H&R Block. The official Jeopardy! retrospective transcript records the clue and her explanation.
How did the one-dollar finish happen?
Jennings entered Final Jeopardy! ahead, with $14,400 to Zerg’s $10,000, despite having missed both Daily Doubles earlier in the game, according to the Television Academy retrospective. Zerg wagered $4,401, bringing her total to $14,401. Jennings responded “FedEx” and wagered $5,601, finishing with $8,799. The official transcript shows Zerg already had a one-dollar lead before Jennings’ response was revealed.
The audience gasped when the outcome became clear. Zerg later described the studio’s reaction as “this huge gasp, this huhhh from the audience and suddenly it was over and, and I had won.” The show’s narrator, Buzzy Cohen, also says the production team was shocked by the responses. In a 2020 Jeopardy! flashback, the director in the booth recognized the result before the onstage reveal.

Why H&R Block did not come to Jennings’ mind
The loss was not simply a matter of Jennings failing to try. The Television Academy retrospective says he had prepared his own tax return, while CBS quoted him crediting Zerg’s performance: “It came down to Nancy playing a very good game, much better than me.” He later said that even more time to think would not have produced the right response.
When did the streak end, and what did Jennings win?
The episode aired November 30, 2004. Jennings’ run had begun June 2, 2004, and he finished with 74 wins and $2,520,700. The win total was reported contemporaneously by the Associated Press in a report republished by CBS News; CBS also reported the winnings in its December 2 account.

Jeopardy!’s retrospective transcript says more than 17 million people watched the loss. That is the figure reported by the show’s retrospective, rather than an independently audited audience measurement.

Jeopardy! removed its five-game champion limit at the start of its 20th season in 2003, allowing champions to continue until they lost. Jennings’ streak took place under that format. Nancy Zerg was the contestant who ended it—not a later champion—and she did so in the Final Jeopardy! round of his 75th game.
