That was Cohen’s public description of alleged intent—not a verified casualty count, a forecast of how many people could have been killed, or a finding about the plot’s technical feasibility. The concerts had already been canceled after an arrest on 7 August.
What did the CIA mean by “tens of thousands”?
Cohen used the phrase to describe what he said the plotters intended. ABC News reported his remarks on 29 August 2024, following his public comments the previous day. He said: “They were plotting to kill a huge number — tens of thousands of people at this concert, including I am sure many Americans — and were quite advanced in this.”
The wording is an attributed intelligence official’s characterization of alleged intent. It should not be read as a count, a modeled estimate of potential casualties, or proof that such a toll would have occurred. The available reporting does not establish an independent casualty estimate for the plot. ABC News reported Cohen’s statement.
What happened to the Vienna concerts?
The prosecution’s later public chronology says police searched the accused’s home and arrested him on 7 August 2024. The three Eras Tour performances planned for Vienna’s Ernst-Happel-Stadion on 8, 9 and 10 August were canceled that day. The shows did not go ahead.

What did prosecutors allege, and what happened in court?
The February 2026 charging account
On 16 February 2026, Vienna prosecutors announced terrorism-related charges against Beran A. Their release alleged that he planned an attack at the 9 August 2024 show and sought bomb-making instructions and materials, as well as illegal weapons. Those are allegations described in the charging account; the release alone does not establish them as facts. It also said the indictment was not yet final when announced. The prosecutor’s release contains the charging account and its procedural qualification.

The reported May 2026 verdict
Associated Press reported that an Austrian court convicted Beran A. on 28 May 2026 and sentenced him to 15 years in prison. AP said his defense lawyer would consider whether to accept the verdict. The available reporting does not establish whether the verdict later became final, so the conviction and sentence should be attributed to AP’s report rather than described as a confirmed final judgment. AP also reported that Beran A. said in court, “I would just like to say that I am sorry.” Associated Press’s report describes the verdict and sentence.
