On May 30, 2025, Taylor Swift announced that she bought the master recordings of her first six albums from Shamrock Capital. She also said that her music, music videos, concert films, album art, photography and unreleased songs now belonged to her. The announcement is often shortened to “Swift owns all her music,” but the deal’s clearly described scope is her first six albums and the additional assets she listed—not a blanket statement about every possible right or future recording.
What Taylor Swift bought
Swift’s first six studio albums were released through Big Machine Records, from her 2006 self-titled debut through 2017’s Reputation. After Big Machine was acquired in 2019 by a group led by Scooter Braun, the masters were sold to Shamrock Capital in 2020. Swift announced that she had purchased them from Shamrock on May 30, 2025. In her letter announcing the purchase, Swift said the music she had made, music videos, concert films, album art, photography and unreleased songs were hers.
That description combines the core transaction—master recordings for the first six albums—with the additional assets Swift named. The public statements do not establish the terms for every possible right, royalty stream or file, so it is more precise to describe what she identified than to infer a broader legal scope. The purchase price and financial terms were not disclosed by Swift, and the Associated Press and Reuters also reported that the terms were undisclosed. The Associated Press account and Reuters’ report do not confirm a price.
What master recordings mean—and what they do not mean
A master is the recording of a performance: the particular recorded version listeners hear on an album. Publishing rights concern the underlying song—the composition, including its lyrics and melody. Owning a master can give its owner control over uses of that recording, such as licensing it for a soundtrack or commercial. It is not the same as owning the song’s publishing rights.

NPR’s explanation of masters and publishing says Swift retained publishing rights to her songs. The 2025 purchase therefore should not be described as the moment she first gained ownership of her songwriting or publishing rights. It concerns the original recordings and the other assets she named in her announcement.
How the Taylor’s Version recordings fit in
Before the purchase announcement, Swift had released four re-recorded albums: Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) in 2021, followed by Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in 2023. These are new recordings, distinct from the original masters; buying the originals did not erase or invalidate either version. The re-recordings also included vault material and visuals, as the AP reported.

In her May 2025 letter, Swift said she had completely re-recorded her debut album and loved how it sounded. She also said she had recorded less than a quarter of Reputation (Taylor’s Version), describing the original as difficult to improve on. She did not announce a release date for either album, saying they could re-emerge when the time was right. ABC News’ account of her letter likewise notes that no release date was given.
Why the deal mattered to Swift
Swift credited support for the Taylor’s Version albums and the success of the Eras Tour with making the purchase possible. She thanked Shamrock for being the first to offer the music to her and described the acquisition as having no strings attached or partnership. Her announcement was a change in who controlled the original recordings, not a declaration that the re-recordings were no longer relevant.
