After Vienna canceled all three scheduled Eras Tour concerts on August 7, 2024, fans who had traveled to the city found one another in its streets and shared spaces. They sang Taylor Swift songs, comforted one another and exchanged friendship bracelets—making room for grief and connection at the same time.
Why Vienna’s Eras Tour concerts were canceled
On August 7, 2024, authorities announced a suspected attack plot, and concert organizer Barracuda Music canceled all three Eras Tour performances scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at Ernst-Happel-Stadion. The organizer said the decision was made for safety. ORF Wien reported that about 60,000 tickets had been sold for each concert date. ORF’s cancellation report attributed the decision to Barracuda Music; it does not establish that Taylor Swift personally made it.
The cancellation left fans who had traveled to Vienna without the performances they had planned around. The threat was serious, but it is important to keep the account grounded: the reporting establishes that the shows were canceled after authorities announced a planned attack, not every detail of the investigation.
How fans made space for one another
In the days after the cancellations, fans gathered at locations around the city, including Corneliusgasse, whose name recalls Swift’s song “Cornelia Street.” The Vienna Tourist Board described the street as a hotspot for spontaneous singing and dancing. Fans sang together, embraced and traded friendship bracelets. Attendee accounts reported by Variety conveyed both sadness over the canceled shows and the comfort of being with other fans.

A church also welcomed fans to sing. These were gatherings of fans, not events shown by the cited reporting to have been organized by Swift or her team. The bracelets and shared songs offered a way to connect; they did not erase the disappointment or make every attendee’s experience the same.
Corneliusgasse and the friendship-bracelet exchange
Corneliusgasse became a visible meeting point because of its association with “Cornelia Street.” Fans sang and danced there, and friendship bracelets—already a recognizable part of Swift fan culture—became a tangible way to meet and share the moment. The Vienna Tourist Board’s August 9, 2024 release described spontaneous gatherings and the city’s response; Variety reported on fans’ experience on the ground.

Vienna’s official response and the fans’ own response
The city’s public message emphasized both safety and solidarity. In a statement on August 8, Mayor Michael Ludwig said, in translation, “The safety of all Viennese people, the artists, and the many fans who have traveled from near and far is our top priority.” He also wrote, “We will not let terrorism divide us.” The original statements are archived by the City of Vienna.
The Vienna Tourist Board also described temporary gestures for ticket holders during the cancellation weekend, including free admission to museums and public pools and other local offers. These were date- or supply-limited promotions in August 2024, not continuing benefits. They were institutional support; the singing, comfort and bracelet exchanges were fan-led connections.

The Vienna story in The End of an Era
In a December 12, 2025 report, ORF said the documentary series The End of an Era addressed the Vienna cancellations and showed the friendship tree associated with the fans’ gathering. ORF also reported that fans continued to meet there to trade bracelets. Fan-group representative Lex Dimitrijevic told the broadcaster, in translation, “For many in the community, this framing can be an important part of our healing process.” ORF’s follow-up report offers a later account of how the episode and the shared place resonated with fans.
The documentary provides a later reflection on the episode, while the August 2024 gatherings show how fans responded in the immediate aftermath: not by pretending the canceled concerts did not matter, but by finding company in a city where many had arrived for the same reason.
