He had pleaded guilty to murdering three girls and attempting to murder ten other people. The 52 years is a minimum term attached to a life sentence, not a fixed 52-year sentence.
What happened at the Southport dance workshop?
On 29 July 2024, Rudakubana attacked a summer-holiday dance workshop at the Hart Space on Hart Street in Southport. The workshop had a Taylor Swift theme. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said 26 children aged 6 to 13 were in the studio. The Southport Inquiry describes 26 bookings for girls, most aged 6 to 10, as well as a 13-year-old helper; it says the event was advertised for children in school years 2 to 6 and was sold out.
Three girls were killed: Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven; Bebe King, six; and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine. Rudakubana stabbed eleven children, killing three, and also stabbed workshop organiser Leanne Lucas and neighbouring office worker Jonathan Hayes. The CPS charged him with ten counts of attempted murder.
What sentence did Rudakubana receive?
On 23 January 2025, Rudakubana received detention at His Majesty’s pleasure for the murders and life imprisonment for the attempted murders. The court set a minimum term of 52 years. That means 52 years must be served before release can be considered; it is not a determinate sentence that guarantees release at the end of 52 years. The sentence and minimum term are recorded by the CPS and the Southport Inquiry.

How the case reached sentencing
- 29 July 2024: The attack took place at the Hart Space dance workshop.
- 31 July 2024: Rudakubana was charged with three murders, ten attempted murders and possession of a bladed article.
- 20 January 2025: On the first day of his trial, he pleaded guilty to the murders, ten attempted murders, producing ricin and possessing a terrorist document. The CPS plea announcement records the pleas.
- 23 January 2025: He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a 52-year minimum term.
Official accounts differ on the date of a further charge concerning production of ricin and possession of a document likely to be useful to someone preparing an act of terrorism: the CPS sentencing release gives 28 October 2024, while the Inquiry chronology records 31 October. The charge itself and the guilty pleas are established; the discrepancy means the further-charge date should not be treated as settled.
What did the Southport Inquiry conclude?
The Inquiry concluded that the attack was preventable. It identified serious failures in sharing and assessing information about the risk Rudakubana posed and in handling that risk across agencies. Its conclusions also record information known within his family before the attack. These are the Inquiry’s findings about a chain of failures; they should not be reduced to a claim that one warning, institution or agency alone caused the attack.
