The company says they share a 17th-century English immigrant ancestor who helped settle Windsor, Connecticut. This is a records-based genealogy finding attributed to Ancestry—not a reported DNA match.
What relationship did Ancestry report?
Ancestry said its researchers found that Swift and Dickinson are sixth cousins, three times removed. The company announced the finding on March 4, 2024, saying both descend from a 17th-century English immigrant who helped settle Windsor, Connecticut. Ancestry described that person as Swift’s ninth great-grandfather and Dickinson’s sixth great-grandfather.
How strong is the evidence?
Ancestry attributed the discovery to research using online records. Its announcement does not provide a complete, source-by-source documentary chain for both family lines, so the relationship is best described as Ancestry’s reported genealogical finding rather than an independently audited conclusion. The announcement does not cite DNA testing or quantify shared DNA.
Who was the shared ancestor?
Ancestry’s announcement describes the ancestor as a 17th-century English immigrant and early Windsor settler but does not name him. CBS News coverage identifies him as Jonathan Gillette; that name should therefore be attributed to the reporting, not to Ancestry’s announcement.

Why did the connection make headlines?
Ancestry announced the finding in the run-up to Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department, amid fan theories connecting Swift with Dickinson. That timing supplied a cultural hook, but it is not evidence for the family relationship.
What the announcement does—and does not—establish
- Reported relationship: sixth cousins, three times removed.
- Proposed link: a shared 17th-century English immigrant associated with Windsor, Connecticut.
- Research basis: Ancestry says its researchers used online records.
- Not established in the announcement: a full published lineage audit, DNA confirmation, or a measurable amount of shared DNA.
Ancestry’s March 4, 2024 announcement put it this way: “Swift and Dickinson both descend from a 17th century English immigrant who helped settle Windsor, Connecticut.”
