Taylor Swift’s Republic Records/Universal Music Group recording deal was announced on November 19, 2018—not as a new 2026 agreement. UMG described it as a multi-year, multi-album global recording partnership: UMG was her exclusive worldwide recorded-music partner, while Republic Records was her U.S. label partner. Swift’s later statement that she bought back her music concerns ownership, not a newly announced recording contract.
What Taylor Swift’s 2018 record deal said
Universal Music Group announced the agreement on November 19, 2018, describing it as a multi-year, multi-album global recording deal. UMG said it would be Swift’s exclusive worldwide recorded-music partner, with Republic Records serving as her label partner in the United States. UMG’s announcement did not disclose the contract’s exact duration, album count, or financial terms.

At the time, UMG’s release also cited the commercial performance of Swift’s music. It said reputation had nearly 1.3 million albums sold in a seven-day period and described four consecutive albums as having sold more than one million copies in their first week. Those are historical figures reported by the label in 2018, not current sales totals.
What Swift said about masters and Spotify shares
Swift’s public announcement included terms beyond the basic label roles. Official Charts’ contemporaneous account reported that she would own the master recordings of music made under the new contract. It also reported her statement that if UMG sold its Spotify shares, artists would receive a non-recoupable distribution. These points were attributed to Swift’s announcement; they were not specified in UMG’s own press release.

Recording rights and publishing rights are separate
On February 6, 2020, UMG announced that Swift had signed an exclusive global publishing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG). This was a publishing agreement, distinct from the 2018 recording deal. In its 2020 release, UMG again described itself as Swift’s exclusive worldwide recorded-music partner and Republic as her U.S. label partner at that time. UMG’s publishing announcement also reported historical performance figures: 97 million total global album consumption and 54 billion total global streams. It said Lover exceeded 3 million in global consumption in its first week and 5 million within five months. UMG did not provide methodology alongside these numbers, and they should not be read as current totals.
What Swift’s later catalog statement changed
In a later letter on her official website, Swift said, “All of the music I’ve ever made… now belongs… to me.” She described buying back her music and named related assets including music videos, concert films, album art, photography, and unreleased songs. She also credited fan support and thanked Shamrock Capital for offering the opportunity. Her official website presents this as an ownership development; it does not announce a new Republic/UMG recording agreement.

The same letter gave limited, specific information about re-recordings: Swift wrote that she had “haven’t even re-recorded a quarter” of Reputation and had completely re-recorded her debut album. She described possible future releases from those projects as possibilities, not as confirmed or dated release plans.
