Mike Gabler won Survivor 43 after beating Jesse Lopez in the final-four fire-making challenge and reaching the Final Tribal Council with Cassidy Clark and Owen Knight. In his post-finale interview, Gabler said he was relieved he had not followed through on an early request to be voted out, recalling how exhaustion and self-doubt had shaped that moment.
How the Survivor 43 finale ended
Gabler defeated Jesse in fire-making, then faced Cassidy and Owen before the jury. TVLine reported that Gabler won the jury vote 8–1–0. Another syndicated result summary reported 7–1–0, so the exact tally is not consistent across the secondary coverage; the 8–1–0 figure is the one given in TVLine’s interview with Gabler.
The finish hinged on more than the fire challenge. At Final Tribal Council, Gabler made a case that included his role in the vote against Elie Scott. He said he had spearheaded that vote and explained his part in it to the jury. That is Gabler’s account of how he presented his game, rather than an independent evaluation of the move.
Gabler’s reaction to asking to be voted out
In an Entertainment Weekly post-finale interview republished by Yahoo Entertainment on December 15, 2022, Gabler was asked whether he was glad he had not acted on his early request to leave the game. He replied, “I sure am. There’s so many emotions that go through your head when you’re on Survivor, and when you’re sleep deprived, you’re hungry, you’re thirsty, there’s so much going on.”

Gabler described feeling accountable after his tribe lost a challenge and not wanting to use his hidden immunity idol as cover. He said Elie encouraged him to pull himself together and keep playing. His account makes the early request sound less like a settled decision than a reaction to fatigue, pressure and disappointment with himself.
Why Jesse voted for Gabler
Jesse later said Gabler’s explanation of the Elie vote helped persuade him. In a separate TVLine interview, Jesse described asking the finalists for an example of a time they persuaded others to vote the way they wanted. He said Gabler’s answer stood out, and contrasted it with Cassidy’s. That explains Jesse’s own vote; it should not be treated as a definitive account of every juror’s reasoning.

What Gabler said about the prize
In its December 15, 2022 announcement, CBS said Gabler won the $1 million prize and planned to donate the entire amount to Veterans in Need in honor of his father, Robert Gabler. The announcement documents his stated plan at the time; it does not establish that the donation was later completed.
