After commentator Link Lauren questioned whether Charlie Puth would deliver the vocals expected at the Super Bowl, Puth replied that he would not claim to match Whitney Houston—but promised a special arrangement and one of his best vocal performances. The exchange was reported on December 2, 2025, after Puth was announced to sing the national anthem at Super Bowl LX.
What Link Lauren said about Charlie Puth
Lauren Huff’s December 2, 2025 report for Entertainment Weekly, republished by AOL, quoted Link Lauren as posting on X: “Man we’ve fallen from when Whitney Houston sang at the Super Bowl. Charlie Puth? He’s not gonna give us vocals I’m afraid.” The criticism contrasted Puth’s expected vocals with Houston’s celebrated Super Bowl performance.
The reporting characterized Lauren as a political commentator, but the quoted criticism itself was about singing. The coverage does not establish that this particular post was a political argument.
How Puth replied
Puth responded in a repost, according to Huff’s report: “I’ll never claim to be as good of a singer as Whitney Houston ever was. But I assure you we’re putting a really special arrangement together- in D major. It’ll be one of my best vocal performances.”

Lauren then wished Puth success while saying he missed “our big belting divas like Whitney.” These were reported social-media statements; the original posts were not independently verified by the cited coverage.
Which Super Bowl performance was at issue?
Puth’s booking was for “The Star-Spangled Banner” before kickoff at Super Bowl LX, not the halftime show. The Independent reported that Brandi Carlile was scheduled to sing “America the Beautiful” and Coco Jones “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” The game was scheduled for February 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. These were pre-event details reported in December 2025.

In a February 2026 Associated Press report about the pregame performers’ preparation, Puth discussed the challenge of adapting to stadium acoustics and broadcast delay. “There’s not one stadium that sounds alike,” he said. He also described the need for restraint: “You just make sure you don’t over sing.” He said that focusing on other concerns can take him away from the music.

Those later comments provide context about his preparation; they were not part of the December online exchange. The reports cited here establish the criticism, Puth’s response and his preparation remarks, but do not provide a critical review of the completed performance.
