Director Shiro Mouri says the team wanted a power-up with a bigger body, the ability to hit blocks from the side, and a way to spray water. An elephant could do all three.
Why did Nintendo choose an elephant?
In Nintendo’s October 17, 2023 developer interview, Mouri described a design process that began with what the transformation should let players do. “First, we wanted to make the body bigger. Having a bigger body makes stepping on enemies, hitting blocks, and collecting coins easier, adding ease of play. Also, we wanted the characters to be able to hit blocks from the side and to spray water.”

The elephant form brought those ideas together. “We thought these two features would provide more variety to the gameplay. What checks all three of those boxes? An elephant, of course!” Mouri said. The result changes familiar 2D platforming interactions: size helps with basic actions, while the trunk provides new ways to affect the course.
What can Elephant Mario do?
Use size to make familiar actions easier
According to Mouri, the larger body makes it easier to stomp enemies, hit blocks, and collect coins. The transformation therefore changes the feel of ordinary platforming, rather than adding only a new attack.

Hit blocks from the side
Elephant Mario can strike blocks sideways, offering access to blocks players might not reach in the same way with a smaller character. It expands how players can approach course obstacles.
Spray water to affect the course
Water from the trunk can make withered flowers bloom. Developer Koichi Hayashida said those flowers “in turn generate a variety of things.” Nintendo’s interview describes these interactions as a source of secrets and surprises, tying the water attack to exploration as well as action.
The team also considered having the trunk blow up shells, but that idea did not make it into the game. The interview does not give a reason for dropping it, so it should not be read as evidence that the mechanic was tested and rejected for a particular balance or technical problem.
How did the team make Elephant Mario sound different?
The transformation has its own audio identity, not just a new appearance. Composer Koji Kondo said that when a character collects an Elephant Fruit, the transformation includes “wowie zowie,” a phrase unique to the elephant form and absent from past games. The background music arrangement changes too, with dedicated sounds for footsteps, jumping, and spraying water. Kondo said the elephant footsteps were the first sounds created.

Producer Takashi Tezuka singled out another detail: “The ‘boing’ sound it makes when you hit something with your trunk is quite impactful.” These cues make the power-up’s actions audible as well as visible.

That phrase is a lively description, not a measured finding. MobileSyrup used it in its August 31, 2023 interview with Mouri and described fans as quickly becoming enamored after the game’s June 2023 announcement. Where Elephant Mario fits in Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a Nintendo Switch game. Nintendo’s official game page describes Wonder Flowers as transforming courses and gameplay, placing Elephant Mario within a broader design approach that changes the familiar rules of a level. The elephant power-up applies that idea through body size, sideways block hits, and water-based interactions.
