Those reports describe his condition at the time; they do not establish his medical status today.
What happened to Sundance Head?
Head, whose given name is Jason Head, was at his East Texas ranch on November 15, 2024. Publicist Trey Newman told CBS News that Head was putting away a gun when it slipped from its holster, struck the side of a Jeep and discharged into his abdominal area. The Associated Press reported that Head was reaching into his vehicle for a .22-caliber pistol when it fell from its holster and fired. The Los Angeles Times described the incident as occurring while Head was hunting alone at the ranch. These accounts are contemporaneous reporting attributed to Newman and other sources; no independent incident report or medical record is cited in them.
How serious was the injury, and what treatment did he receive?
Reports published in November 2024 said the bullet missed vital organs and lodged in fatty tissue in Head’s abdominal area. The Associated Press reported that he was airlifted to a hospital in Tyler, did not require surgery and was released later on November 15. The Los Angeles Times likewise reported that he was treated and released, with the bullet remaining in his abdominal wall.
Newman told CBS News that Head was expected to make a full recovery. Head’s wife, Misty, wrote in a social media update quoted by CBS, “Prayers answered as no internal damage was done by the bullet. Thank you all for the prayers.” That was her account, not a direct statement from a clinician.
