Stranger Things season 5’s finale screenings reportedly generated more than $25 million across 600 theaters over two days, according to an early industry estimate reported by TheWrap. That figure describes a limited event built around concession-credit purchases, not a clearly established conventional ticket-sales gross—and it was not reported as revenue earned by Netflix.
What does the reported $25 million represent?
TheWrap reported in 2026 that early industry estimates put revenue from the finale’s two-day theatrical event at more than $25 million. The screenings took place on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2025, and New Year’s Day, January 1, 2026, alongside the finale’s release on Netflix.
TheWrap said the event played in 600 theaters. Rather than selling ordinary movie tickets, participating chains reserved seats through purchases of food-and-beverage vouchers or credits. TheWrap reported that theaters kept the proceeds and Netflix took no revenue from the limited event.
The $25 million-plus figure should therefore be described as an early estimate of event or concession-voucher revenue. TheWrap’s report does not establish it as an audited, conventional box-office gross, and the available reporting does not establish that Netflix independently confirmed or audited the total.

How did the theater reservations work?
The arrangement varied by chain. TheWrap reported that AMC and Cinemark charged $20 for vouchers, while Regal charged $11. Because the chains used different voucher prices, the report noted that estimating the event’s total revenue was more difficult than counting ticket sales at a uniform price.
AMC’s arrangement illustrates the distinction: its December 2, 2025 announcement described a two-night engagement at approximately 200 U.S. locations, with a $20 food-and-beverage credit required to reserve a seat. The credit could be redeemed at AMC concessions on the day of the screening. AMC CEO Adam Aron later summarized the setup this way: “The admissions price was free, but required the mandatory purchase of a $20 per-person food and beverage credit.”

How much did AMC report?
AMC Entertainment Holdings’ January 2, 2026 post-event statement reported results for AMC alone, not the full 600-theater event:
- More than 753,000 attendees at 231 AMC theaters in the United States over the two days.
- More than $15.0 million collected by AMC from the required $20-per-person food-and-beverage credit.
- AMC locations accounted for slightly more than one-third of the theater count showing the finale; AMC estimated that more than half of all theater attendees watched at an AMC.
AMC had announced approximately 200 locations in advance and reported 231 participating U.S. theaters after the event. It also said it added showtimes, reaching more than nine times the seating capacity originally envisioned. These are company-reported figures and estimates, distinct from TheWrap’s early industry estimate for the event across all participating theaters.

Was the finale’s reported total a standard box-office gross?
Not in the usual sense. In a conventional theatrical release, box-office gross generally refers to money paid for admission tickets. For this event, the chains used food-and-beverage voucher purchases to reserve seats, and AMC described admission as free subject to the required credit purchase. TheWrap reported that theaters retained the proceeds.
That difference matters when comparing the figure with a film’s ordinary theatrical gross: the $25 million-plus estimate reflects a different transaction, was attributed to early industry estimates, and was not presented as an audited Netflix-reported box-office total. AMC’s $15.0 million-plus figure is narrower still: it is AMC’s reported collection from its own required credits, not an estimate of total event revenue.
