They made their own informal gathering—not an official concert screening or venue activation.
What does “Taylor-gating” mean?
“Taylor-gating” described fans gathering outside a venue where Taylor Swift was performing, singing along from outside after missing out on tickets. The term captured a fan-made alternative to being inside the concert, not an event run by the venue.
Before the second Melbourne show, a fan-group invitation put it this way: “For the thousands of us who missed out on Eras tickets! Get your outfits, make your bracelets and let’s Taylor-Gate at MCG! Everyone welcome, even NZ and Canada!” PerthNow reported on the gathering on 18 February 2024.
What happened outside the MCG?
Ticketless fans gathered in Yarra Park, singing along and trading friendship bracelets; some also bought merchandise. The Melbourne Cricket Club’s 2023–24 annual report says thousands gathered across the three-show run. It does not give a verified count for the Saturday gathering alone, so the broader figure should not be read as a number for that night.

Swift performed at the MCG on 16, 17 and 18 February 2024. The venue reported 96,000 attendees each night—288,000 across the three shows—and described each performance as 44 songs over three and a half hours. Those are figures for the ticketed shows, not the crowd outside. The Melbourne Cricket Club annual report and the MCG’s event summary document the run.
Was there a screen showing the concert?
No. Contemporary guidance reported that the MCG had announced no live screens or activations in Yarra Park. The fans outside were holding their own sing-along, not watching an official broadcast of the show.

Venue guidance also restricted alcohol, marquees, tents, installed infrastructure and barbecues in the park for the shows. The Melbourne Cricket Club said the rules were intended to help keep entry and exit safe and preserve accessible parking. The New Daily’s 7 February 2024 report covered the guidance before the concerts.
Why did some fans miss out?
Tickets were difficult to secure, and scams added risk for people searching for resale offers. On 24 January 2024, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) warned that scammers were using compromised social-media accounts to advertise fake tickets. At the time of its warning, it had received 273 reports of Taylor Swift ticket scams through social media, with more than $135,000 in reported Australian losses.

For the 2024 Australian tour, the ACCC identified Ticketek Marketplace as the authorised reseller. That was tour-specific guidance issued in 2024, not confirmation of current resale arrangements. The ACCC’s Deputy Chair, Catriona Lowe, said: “The Eras Tour is the hottest ticket in town this summer and scammers are seizing the opportunity to dupe Australian Swifties looking to buy resale tickets,” The ACCC warning explains the scams and its advice at the time.

The restrictions above describe guidance for the February 2024 shows. For a future event, check the MCG’s current Yarra Park guidance rather than assuming the same event arrangements apply. Its current page says barbecues and tailgate activities are not permitted on event days.
