Kishkindha Kaandam caught viewers’ attention with a missing-gun mystery that opens onto a troubled family’s secrets. Its success is backed by a strong domestic box-office showing and critical praise for its layered writing and restrained performances—not evidence that it is currently trending in 2026.

Directed by Dinjith Ayyathan and written by Bahul Ramesh, this 2024 Malayalam mystery thriller runs 2 hours 5 minutes. Its limited theatrical release began on September 12, 2024, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

The story starts when a gun belonging to Appu Pillai (Vijayaraghavan) goes missing. His son Ajayan (Asif Ali) and Ajayan’s new wife, Aparna (Aparna Balamurali), live amid further unanswered questions, including the disappearance of Ajayan’s son and Appu’s puzzling behavior. Aparna is new to the family and helps bring its mysteries into focus. The setup is best left there: the film’s revelations are central to its appeal.
The title refers to the monkey kingdom in the Ramayana. Monkeys in the nearby forest play a part in events around the Pillai family, but that connection does not make the film a direct adaptation of the epic.

Why did the film resonate with critics and viewers?
A mystery built from connected secrets
In its November 2024 feature, Scroll praises Bahul Ramesh’s intricate screenplay, in which past events shape the present and the missing gun leads into a much larger family riddle. The film asks viewers to connect clues rather than rely on a stream of flashy twists. Scroll Staff summed up the transition: “From missing gun to missing son, the movie takes grand leaps that are delivered not through gimmickry but with sobriety.”
Restrained performances and an emotional payoff
Scroll highlights Asif Ali’s expressive but controlled performance and a subdued ensemble. Aparna’s position as an outsider gives the story a way into the family’s unanswered questions. The payoff, in Scroll’s reading, is melancholic rather than simply the satisfaction of solving a puzzle. Those are a critic’s assessments, not proof that all viewers respond the same way.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed one critic review and more than 50 audience ratings when accessed. Its 94% audience score reflects that limited, self-selected sample, not a representative poll. Its listed critic, Panos Kotzathanasis of Asian Movie Pulse, calls the film “a very competent film that manages to be both entertaining and contextually rich,” while also noting plot holes and excess in places.
How strong was its box-office performance?
Ormax Media’s 2024 Malayalam domestic chart lists Kishkindha Kaandam at ₹49 crore gross. The chart reports domestic gross and, for films released in multiple languages, counts their Malayalam versions. That makes ₹49 crore a clearly scoped indicator of the film’s theatrical reach, rather than a worldwide total. Ormax Media’s annual chart supports calling it a hit; the figure alone does not establish one specific cause for its success.

A separate November 2024 report by The Indian Express, citing Sacnilk, put the film’s worldwide gross at ₹75.25 crore. That worldwide figure uses a different scope and source, so it should not be directly compared with Ormax’s ₹49 crore domestic total.

As checked on October 8, 2026, JustWatch’s India listing names JioHotstar and Vi Movies & TV for streaming. This is a country-specific listing, not confirmation of availability elsewhere; catalogs, subscription eligibility, audio and subtitle options can change. Check the service in your own region before subscribing.
Vi’s subscriber information says eligible prepaid and postpaid plans can include JioHotstar access, while Vi Movies & TV plans offer access to multiple streaming services. Eligibility depends on the plan, so check its terms rather than assuming either service is included with every Vi subscription.
