By that standard, TIME’s 2023 pick of Heineken 0.0 as “Best” and its “Most On-Brand Casting” label for Dunkin’s Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez spot are useful examples—not a universal ranking. The “Beyoncé” end of this title needs a qualification: a 2024 Yahoo/For The Win result mentions her Verizon ad, but the available page information does not establish enough detail to assess that spot or its place in a ranking.
How to judge “best,” “worst” and “WTF”
Those labels are opinions, not a single measurable league table. A spot can be memorable and still fail to explain the product; a celebrity cameo can earn attention without making the brand more distinctive. A useful judgment asks five questions:
- Can viewers tell what is being advertised?
- Does the celebrity or cultural reference strengthen the product message?
- Does the humor, sentiment or surprise feel original and right for the brand?
- Does the ad remain memorable after its punchline or cameo?
- Is the surprise delightful, confusing or off-putting?
These are review criteria, not a standardized scoring system. They also help explain why different critics can reasonably name different winners. TIME’s 2023 roundup made that distinction visible with separate labels for “Best,” “Most On-Brand Casting,” “Most Questionable Casting” and “Most Dramatic,” rather than pretending every ad succeeds or fails on one scale. TIME’s 2023 Super Bowl ad roundup is the source for those categories.
The Bennifer spot: a celebrity joke that fits the brand
For the title’s Bennifer reference, the clearest example is Dunkin’s 2023 commercial. TIME reports that Ben Affleck worked the drive-through in Medford, Massachusetts, and Jennifer Lopez appeared beside him to order from her husband. TIME categorized the casting as “Most On-Brand.” The premise turns Affleck’s association with Dunkin into the joke, while Lopez’s appearance gives the spot a second celebrity beat; the brand is part of the setup rather than a logo pasted onto an unrelated cameo. That is a stronger case for “best” than celebrity wattage alone: the casting, setting and product point in the same direction. It does not prove that every viewer liked the ad, or that it was the year’s overall winner by consensus. It is a specific critic’s category and a defensible reading of why the concept works.
TIME’s 2023 picks show why categories matter
TIME named Heineken 0.0 its “Best” ad of 2023, while assigning other spots distinct superlatives: Avocados from Mexico was “Most Questionable Casting,” and Squarespace was “Most Dramatic.” These labels identify different kinds of success or risk, not positions in a comprehensive ranking of every Super Bowl commercial. The roundup’s categories and examples are TIME’s judgments for that year.

That distinction matters when using words such as “worst” or “WTF.” An odd casting choice may be deliberately provocative; a dramatic execution may be admired without being funny; and a technically polished ad may still be hard to remember. Without a named critic, poll or measurement method, calling one spot the objective worst would overstate what a retrospective can establish.
Why the Beyoncé reference needs care
The 2024 Yahoo Entertainment/For The Win result titled “Best, Worst, and Most WTF Super Bowl Ads, From Beyoncé to Bennifer” mentions Beyoncé’s Verizon ad. That mention alone does not establish the piece’s full ranking, its criteria or enough details to judge the Beyoncé spot. It would be misleading to assign it a “best,” “worst” or “WTF” placement based only on the headline and snippet. The Yahoo/For The Win result is the relevant reference, but its available information is not sufficient to substantiate a detailed assessment here.

Super Bowl ads compete for attention before kickoff, too
The event’s advertising spectacle is not confined to the broadcast. In its preview before Super Bowl LVIII, the Associated Press described advertisers releasing commercials ahead of the game to take advantage of the buildup. Its examples included Budweiser’s Clydesdales, a Michelob Ultra spot featuring Lionel Messi, and an Uber Eats reunion featuring Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer. AP reported a 30-second rate of $7 million for the 2024 game; that is a figure for that event, not a standing price. The AP’s February 4, 2024 preview provides that context.
The economics and audience figures change by year. In its February 6, 2026 preview, AP reported that the 2025 game drew 127.7 million U.S. viewers across television and streaming. For Super Bowl LX in 2026, AP reported an average of $8 million per 30-second ad unit and some placements above $10 million, attributing those prices to NBCUniversal executive Peter Lazarus. Those are AP’s reports about the 2025 audience and 2026 ad market—not timeless benchmarks. AP’s 2026 preview also surveyed that year’s themes, including celebrity casting, nostalgia, AI and technology, health advertising and sentiment.

When spectacle becomes the point
In the 2026 preview, Villanova University marketing professor Charles Taylor described a tendency toward escapist, non-divisive advertising in the event’s party atmosphere: “Because of the Super Bowl’s status as a pop culture event with a fun party atmosphere, the vast majority of brands will avoid any dark or divisive tone and instead allow consumers to escape from thinking about these troubled times,” he said, as quoted by AP. That was Taylor’s forecast in the preview, not a verified description of every commercial shown.
Escapism can produce a crowd-pleaser, but it is not a substitute for a clear idea. The most successful oddball ad still connects its strangeness to what the brand is selling. If a viewer remembers only the celebrity, costume or surreal image, the “WTF” may have overwhelmed the message.
