In the anime encounter, the System uses him as the castle’s final test. That makes “toughest opponent so far” a time-bounded judgment about Jinwoo’s anime battles—not a definitive ranking of every opponent in the wider story.
Was the Baran Jinwoo fought real?
Not in the sense of being the original Demon Monarch. The Baran encountered in the Demon Castle is described as a recreation generated by the System to serve as the castle’s final test. The Direct places this explanation in season 2, episode 9 (episode 22 overall). The Direct’s explanation of Baran and the System
So the fight is real for Jinwoo, but his opponent is an artificial challenge rather than the original Baran. That distinction matters when describing the battle: Jinwoo defeats the recreation, not the Demon Monarch himself.
Why didn’t Jinwoo arise Baran?
“Arise” is Jinwoo’s attempt to extract a defeated enemy and make it a shadow soldier. The explanation given for Baran is twofold: Jinwoo’s ability is stated to be unable to extract demons or monarchs, and this particular Baran is also a System-created construct. Both points distinguish him from an ordinary defeated opponent. The Direct’s account of why Jinwoo did not arise Baran

The same account notes that Jinwoo can turn the dragon into a shadow because it is not classified as a demon. That detail does not establish broader rules for every creature or every circumstance; it explains the contrast in this encounter.
Is Baran Jinwoo’s toughest opponent in the anime so far?
Baran is a plausible answer when the question refers to the later Demon Castle fight, but “toughest” is not a measurable or settled ranking. It can mean danger, effort, how much Jinwoo had to adapt, or how the story presents a battle. The episode coverage establishes no numerical difficulty scale or definitive anime-wide scorecard.

The label also shifts as the anime progresses. In February 2024, ComicBook.com described the Cerberus fight in episode 7 as Jinwoo’s toughest “yet.” The later Baran encounter, covered in connection with season 2, episode 9, is a different point in the story. These are stage-specific descriptions, not contradictions or proof of an official ranking. ComicBook.com’s coverage of Jinwoo’s Cerberus fight · The Direct on the later Baran encounter

No. The anime claim should not be extended to later source material. ComingSoon identifies Antares, the King of Dragons and Monarch of Destruction, as Jinwoo’s toughest opponent in the webtoon and places their battle across chapters 173–177. That is later-story context, not evidence that Antares has appeared in the anime material covered by the Baran episode reporting. ComingSoon’s account of the Antares battle

In short, Baran is a System-made final test whose anime fight can be called Jinwoo’s toughest so far depending on what “toughest” means. The claim is limited to that point in the anime; it does not describe the original Demon Monarch or settle the ranking for the entire story.
