The finale’s strongest move is making science and accountability part of the solution, not just decoration around an action climax. Its trial gives the conflict weight, though the crisis sometimes crowds out the debate it sets up.
What happens in the finale?
The episode picks up as the USS Athena carries Caleb, the cadets and Caleb’s mother, Anisha, toward safety. Nus Braka has seeded Federation space with Omega-47 mines, isolating the ship and threatening consequences on a catastrophic scale. He takes Nahla and Anisha away; aboard the Athena, the Doctor’s holographic decoy buys the crew time while Jett organizes the cadets and assigns emergency roles.
Nus turns the Academy’s detached atrium into a public trial of the Federation. He accuses it of abandoning his mining community, forcing Nahla to defend the ideals she represents while confronting the institution’s failures. Anisha’s anger at Nahla remains part of the dispute rather than disappearing under the pressure of the emergency.
On the Athena, the Doctor’s malfunctioning speech offers a clue. Sam connects Rubin particles to the Omega molecule, giving the cadets a scientific route to stabilize the threat. They work out how to disable the minefield, and Starfleet regains control. The account of the colony’s destruction also proves more complicated than Nus’s accusation: the explosions came from a weapon his father made using available strontium fuel. Nus is taken into custody.

Does the Federation-on-trial story work?
The trial gives the finale a strong frame: the season’s conflict is not only about stopping Nus, but about whether the Federation can answer for the harm done to his community. Nahla’s role is deliberately uncomfortable. She stands for an institution whose principles she believes in, but those principles do not erase its failures. Anisha’s presence keeps that tension personal, with anger that cooperation cannot instantly resolve.
The courtroom structure gives the finale a chance to revisit questions raised by the pilot, but it has to share space with a ship in peril and a minefield threatening Federation territory. At moments, the action moves faster than the argument can deepen. Still, the hearing makes the crisis more than a puzzle with a technical fix: the Federation must consider what it owes people who have reason to distrust it.

Why the science solution matters
The cadets do not solve the crisis by overpowering Nus. Their work depends on noticing a scientific connection between Rubin particles and Omega, then applying it to the minefield. Jett’s emergency assignments and the cadets’ collaboration make their Academy training consequential under pressure, while Sam’s inference supplies the pivotal insight.
That approach aligns with the finale’s stated creative intent. Co-showrunner Noga Landau told TV Guide: “We cannot solve the end of this season by blowing something up. We cannot solve the end of this season by enacting violence against our enemies. We simply have to use the values of Star Trek to outwit our opponents.” The finale largely follows through: intellect and scientific knowledge change the outcome, even if the story still allows a cathartic punch once the immediate danger has passed.

Where do Caleb and Anisha end up?
Caleb’s search for his mother reaches a pause rather than a neat, permanent resolution. Anisha is free to explore, and Caleb plans to spend the summer with her before returning to the Academy. That choice lets him reconnect with his mother without abandoning the found-family life he has built among the cadets.
Nahla and Anisha also do not emerge with their relationship magically repaired. They have to cooperate during the crisis, but Anisha’s anger remains. Leaving that emotional work unfinished feels more credible than treating shared danger as an automatic reconciliation.

Episode title, release date and where to watch
The title discrepancy matters: Rotten Tomatoes identifies Season 1, Episode 10 as “Rubicon,” while TVLine’s finale coverage spells it “Rubincon.” The official StarTrek.com schedule gives the finale date but not an episode title. This review uses “Rubincon” when referring to the episode, following the finale coverage, rather than treating “The End and the Beginning” as an official title.
The finale aired March 12, 2026, on Paramount+. The season’s announced release plan covered the U.S., U.K., Latin America, Australia, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Japan and Canada; streaming catalogs and rights can change, so availability depends on region. How critics responded
Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page displays four critic reviews, with scores ranging from 7/10 to 9/10 and from 4/5 to 4.5/5. That is a small set of individual assessments, not a measure of all critics or viewers. Tell-Tale TV’s Melody McCune wrote, “When everything fires on all cylinders, it soars,” while also noting the first season’s growing pains.
The finale’s appeal rests on how well its pieces meet: a team of cadets applying what they have learned, a conflict grounded in institutional accountability, and a resolution that uses discovery rather than sheer force. The trial could have carried more of the emotional weight, but it gives the action a moral question worth asking. Season 1 ends with Nus in custody, Caleb’s immediate family search settled for now, and his return to the Academy still ahead.
