Stanley Tucci said he would not play George Harvey again in Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones. In a 2023 interview, he described the role as a tough experience—but called the film wonderful. The distinction matters: his regret was about inhabiting the character, not rejecting the movie.
Which role did Stanley Tucci say he would not play again?
Tucci was referring to George Harvey, the serial killer he portrayed in The Lovely Bones, Jackson’s film adaptation of Alice Sebold’s 2002 novel. Asked about the role by Entertainment Tonight on April 18, 2023, he said: “I would not play George Harvey again in The Lovely Bones, which was horrible.”
He immediately distinguished the character from the film: “It’s a wonderful movie, but it was a tough experience. Simply because of the role.” His answer was not that the film was bad; he said the difficulty came from playing Harvey.
Why did Tucci try to get out of the part?
Tucci recalled asking director Peter Jackson why he had been cast and trying to leave the role, even though he needed work. “I asked Peter Jackson why he cast me in that role. I tried to get out of playing the role, which is crazy because I needed a job,” he told ET.

Tucci said Jackson’s answer was, “Because you’re funny.” He understood the casting choice as a way to keep Harvey from becoming overly dramatic: rather than heighten the character’s awfulness, Tucci could play against it. The anecdote helps explain the creative reasoning, but it did not make the experience of the role easy for him.
What did the performance earn?
Secondary accounts report that Tucci received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. Ranker’s 2025 recap and Looper identify the nomination, and Rotten Tomatoes’ 2010 Oscar-nominee coverage includes Tucci among the supporting-actor nominees. That recognition sits alongside, rather than contradicting, his account of finding the role difficult.
