Why is Oh Il-nam’s casting discussed as a surprise?
In a Netflix Tudum feature published August 17, 2022, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explained the choice to keep the character unfamiliar to viewers: “We wanted Il-nam to be unknown so that he would seem like the actual character in the show.” The feature also discusses Oh Young-soo’s casting and the marbles sequence. Oh recalled, “I was reminded of my childhood playing the game,” referring to playing marbles as a boy—not to any earlier acting credit. Production designer Chae Kyoung-sun described the scene’s emotional quality: “It is a very cold and heartbreaking game.” Read the Netflix Tudum feature.
