On March 11, 2025, Stephen Colbert used the opening monologue of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to mock Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s Tesla publicity appearance outside the White House. His main punchline was about Trump pronouncing the carmaker’s name “Tesler.”
What happened outside the White House
Trump and Musk spoke to reporters in front of a display of Tesla vehicles. TV Insider described the event as a Tesla-buying publicity stunt; the available account does not establish that it was an advertisement produced by Tesla. Colbert’s segment was a late-night monologue about the appearance, not a Tesla commercial.
Colbert’s “Tesler” joke
TV Insider quoted Colbert reacting to a clip of Trump saying, “I love Tesler!”: “He almost got the name right,” Colbert said. He followed with, “It’s an honest mistake. He just mixed up the two words most associated with Elon Musk: Tesla and Hitler.” These are lines as quoted by TV Insider, not an independently verified transcript.
The monologue’s boycott and market context
The segment also addressed reports of Tesla stock losses and Musk’s explanation that “activists and Ukrainian hackers” were to blame. TV Insider reported that Colbert cited a 50% decline in Tesla stock since December; the article did not specify the exact measurement date or identify the underlying market-data source, so that figure describes the March 2025 coverage, not Tesla’s current performance.

Trump had claimed on Truth Social that people were trying to “illegally and collusively boycott Tesla.” Colbert challenged the idea that declining to make an optional purchase could be illegal, asking, “How do you illegally boycott something?” TV Insider says he extended the joke by comparing the claim to being locked inside a West Elm until buying a candle.
TV Insider also reported Colbert discussing the Dow falling more than 400 points amid Trump’s tariffs. That, too, is a figure reported in coverage of the March 2025 monologue, not a current market update.
