Stephen Colbert continued criticizing Donald Trump after CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end, and he did so through the program’s final episode on May 21, 2026. The cancellation’s motive remains unresolved: CBS called it a financial decision, while the timing prompted suspicion that politics played a role. Colbert himself said both the business pressures and the suspicious timing could be real without claiming to know which explanation controlled.
What happened, and when?
The key events unfolded over ten months. Colbert’s on-air criticism of a Paramount settlement preceded CBS’s cancellation announcement by three days; the show then continued until its scheduled conclusion in May 2026.

| July 14, 2025 | Colbert criticized Paramount’s $16 million settlement with Trump over a lawsuit concerning a 60 Minutes interview, calling it “a big fat bribe.” That was Colbert’s characterization, not a legal finding. CBS News and Axios reported the sequence and settlement figure. |
| July 17, 2025 | CBS announced The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end in May 2026 and that it would retire the Late Show franchise. CBS said the decision was “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” CBS News reported the announcement and the network’s statement. |
| April 28, 2026 | In an interview discussed by TheWrap, Colbert said that the financial explanation and people’s suspicion about the timing could both be true, while stressing he was not asserting that both explanations were true. |
| May 21, 2026 | Colbert hosted the final episode. CBS reported that his 11-year tenure included more than 1,800 episodes. CBS News |

Why did CBS cancel The Late Show?
CBS’s stated explanation was financial. The network described late night as facing a challenging backdrop and said the cancellation was not related “in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.” Those are CBS’s claims about its decision; they do not independently establish the internal reasoning behind it. CBS News
The timing drove the competing suspicion. Colbert’s criticism of Paramount’s Trump settlement came just before CBS announced the cancellation. Trump publicly celebrated the decision, and coverage also discussed criticism of the program. Those facts help explain why observers questioned the financial rationale, but they are not evidence by themselves that Trump caused the cancellation or that CBS acted to secure merger approval. The Associated Press reported both CBS’s economic explanation and skepticism about the timing, including an expert’s political-causation assessment; it did not report a conclusive internal record proving motive.

Did Trump get Stephen Colbert canceled?
The available evidence does not establish that Trump caused CBS to cancel the show. It documents the proximity of Colbert’s criticism, the cancellation announcement, and Trump’s public reaction, but no conclusive account of CBS’s internal decision-making. An expert’s view that political factors mattered, as reported by the Associated Press, is an assessment—not a court or regulatory finding.
Colbert also did not say he knew the cancellation was political. In April 2026, he told The New York Times, as summarized by TheWrap: “I believe two things can be true. I’m not saying the two things are true.” He said the business pressures facing broadcast television could be real while people could reasonably find the timing suspicious. He did not dispute CBS’s rationale or claim certainty about which explanation controlled.

Did Colbert stop criticizing Trump?
No: the cancellation announcement did not immediately end Colbert’s criticism. The documented example immediately preceding it was his July 14, 2025, description of Paramount’s $16 million settlement with Trump as “a big fat bribe.” The phrase was a political accusation by Colbert, not an established legal conclusion. He remained host until the final episode on May 21, 2026; the show’s end means this chronology concerns his criticism on The Late Show, not an ongoing broadcast.
CBS reported that Colbert hosted the program for 11 years and presented more than 1,800 episodes. CBS also described the show as the No. 1 late-night program for nine consecutive seasons; that ranking is CBS’s claim as reported by the network, not an independently supplied ratings dataset. CBS News

What did Colbert say about free speech after the show ended?
In October 2026, after The Late Show won an Emmy, Colbert said, “Free speech is alive and well.” He explained: “Because if you can’t say something because you go to jail, that is a violation of free speech.” He also described late night as still funny and vital. These remarks distinguish losing a television program from state punishment for speech; they do not settle whether political pressure played any part in CBS’s decision. The comments were reported by CinemaBlend.
