Stephen Colbert received a standing ovation at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14, 2025, then used the moment to joke about finding work as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert approached its announced end. His “Is anyone hiring?” line was a comic bit, not a reported job application.
What happened when Colbert took the stage?
Colbert was presenting the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series award in Los Angeles when the audience rose and chanted his name. The ovation came before his remarks, not in response to the job joke. Rolling Stone Australia and Variety Australia both reported the crowd’s reaction and the sequence of events.
What did Stephen Colbert say?
After the ovation, Colbert said: “While I have your attention, is anyone hiring? Because I’ve got 200 very well-qualified candidates with me here tonight. We’ll be available in June.” The Associated Press reported the exchange as part of his presentation at the ceremony: AP’s Emmys highlights.
The “200 very well-qualified candidates” was a joke about colleagues from the show, not a verified headcount or employment statistic. Colbert extended the gag by producing a résumé and an old headshot. He said he had only one copy and asked Harrison Ford to pass it to Steven Spielberg, turning the idea of a job search into a celebrity handoff bit. Rolling Stone Australia’s account describes the résumé and headshot gag.

Why was he joking about being available?
CBS had announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end in May 2026, citing financial reasons, according to AP and Axios. Colbert’s reference to being available “in June” connected the joke to the show’s planned end. The reports describe a comic appeal for work; they do not establish that he submitted a genuine application, received an offer, or was speaking for every member of the staff.
What happened later that night?
Later in the ceremony, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Talk Series for the first time, a separate moment from Colbert’s presentation and hiring joke. Axios and the Los Angeles Times covered the win.
