Stephen A. Smith’s reported top five WWE wrestlers puts Goldberg at No. 1, followed by Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, The Rock and the Road Warriors. Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Undertaker are absent. The ranking came up during an ESPN First Take discussion ahead of Wrestlepalooza; it was Smith’s personal list, not an official WWE ranking.
Stephen A. Smith’s top five WWE wrestlers, in order
- Goldberg
- Ric Flair
- Hulk Hogan
- The Rock
- The Road Warriors
SPORTbible’s account gives the order from fifth to first, placing the Road Warriors fifth and Goldberg first. Wrestling Attitude also reports the same names and supports Goldberg’s position in its account of Triple H’s reaction, although the numerals displayed alongside its list conflict with the accompanying text. The order above follows the explicit prose and quotation rather than those inconsistent labels.
Why did Triple H question Goldberg at No. 1?
On ESPN’s First Take, ahead of Wrestlepalooza, Paul “Triple H” Levesque described Smith’s ranking as a “bait and switch.” SPORTbible quoted Levesque explaining that Smith had assembled four choices he considered an arguably accurate setup, then put Goldberg first because that was the choice most likely to provoke a reaction.
“So what he did is he bait and switched it. He set up a list that is arguably accurate: the Road Warriors, The Rock, Hogan, Flair. He left out a few because it’s just a top five. But then what he does is he comes in and he ‘Stephen A’s it,’ and he goes Goldberg at number one, because he knows that is the name that is going to piss off the maximum amount of people.”

Where are Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Undertaker?
Neither Austin nor The Undertaker appears in the five reported selections. SPORTbible identifies both among familiar names in the all-time conversation before presenting Smith’s choices; Wrestling Attitude also notes Shawn Michaels among the omissions. The available reports do not provide Smith’s explanation for leaving any of them out.

What Smith’s ranking does—and doesn’t—tell us
The list records Smith’s personal choices in a television discussion. The available reporting does not establish criteria such as championships, match quality, drawing power, longevity or cultural influence, so it would be misleading to present any of those as his stated method. Viewers can use those or other standards to debate the order, but they are not confirmed reasons for Smith’s selections.
ESPN’s indexed listing names the segment “Triple H questions Stephen A.’s top 5 wrestlers of all time.” The page itself was not readable in the available access, so the reported order and Levesque’s remarks here are attributed to the readable accounts from SPORTbible and Wrestling Attitude.
