It doesn’t prove that anime ratings mean nothing. It shows why an early score needs context: GamesRadar reported that Steel Ball Run briefly reached 9.35 on MyAnimeList on March 19, 2026, then stood at 9.23 on March 24, when just one episode had been released. Those are dated reports, not verified current figures or a settled verdict on an unfinished series.
What did Steel Ball Run’s debut score show?
GamesRadar reported a MyAnimeList score of 9.35 for Steel Ball Run on March 19, 2026, attributing that figure to Anime Rave. In a March 24 report, GamesRadar gave the score as 9.23 and noted that only one episode had been released at the time. These numbers describe what was reported on those dates; they should not be presented as the title’s current score or as independently confirmed historical records. GamesRadar’s March 24 report
One episode’s reception can be enthusiastic, but a score at that stage cannot represent audience judgment of a completed season. It is an early snapshot of submitted ratings, not a final assessment of the whole work.
Does a high rank mean the rating is meaningless?
No. A score and a rank answer different questions. A score is an aggregate of submitted ratings; a rank places a title relative to other titles on a particular list, at a particular time, under that list’s chosen calculation. A high position after one episode may prompt questions about how meaningful the comparison is, but it does not by itself show that the score is worthless.

A third-party explorer’s saved MyAnimeList Top-200 snapshot illustrates how rankings can change with the metric: its official-score view places Sousou no Frieren first, while alternate trimmed-mean calculations put Steel Ball Run at the top of certain rankings. What do viewer reactions establish?
Some viewers questioned why a show with “1 episode” ranked so highly, and one discussion used the phrase “MAL ratings really don’t mean much anymore.” Those comments establish that viewers were debating the ranking. They do not establish coordinated rating manipulation, brigading, or a platform-wide failure of anime ratings.
The available reporting does not provide an official MyAnimeList vote count for either reported score. Without that figure, readers cannot assess the sample size from these sources; comments and a high position are not substitutes for evidence of manipulation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you read an early anime score?
- Check the date. Treat the 9.35 and 9.23 figures as March 2026 reports, not current values.
- Check what was rated. At the time of the March 24 report, only one episode had been released; the score was not a verdict on a completed season.
- Separate score from rank. A chart position depends on the list, snapshot, and calculation being used.
- Look for the vote count and method. The available sources do not establish the vote totals for these figures or MyAnimeList’s exact current scoring methodology.
- Use the score as one signal. An early rating can show strong enthusiasm among people who submitted ratings, but it cannot stand in for every viewer’s opinion or settle the quality of an unfinished series.
No current official MyAnimeList score, rank, or vote count is verified here. The strongest supported conclusion is narrower than the headline’s claim: early community ratings can be useful snapshots, but they should not be mistaken for final, objective judgments.
