It contains a brief Sonic-and-Shadow minigame alongside film-promotion materials, rather than a full commercial game. The available reporting does not establish that the cartridge was sold to the public.
What is on the cartridge?
IGN’s November 22, 2024 walkthrough shows a promotional cartridge with a menu of film-related content. The described sections include character voice clips, a poster section and an unlockable minigame. Nintendo Wire likewise reported that the cartridge contained electronic press kit materials and a minigame, and said it worked on original Genesis hardware.
In the minigame, Sonic runs from Shadow. The available descriptions support calling it a small promotional experience—not a complete, retail-quality Sonic the Hedgehog 3 game.

What did the cheat-code easter egg reveal?
IGN reported that entering the familiar Sonic 3 cheat-code sequence in the minigame unlocked a “Trailer?” menu item and the date November 25, 2024. That was the date the next film trailer was due; it is a historical promotional reveal, not a current release announcement.
Could fans buy the cartridge?
Public retail availability is unverified. The reporting presents the cartridge as a promotional press item, but does not establish that Paramount or SEGA offered it through ordinary retail channels. No production quantity, distribution count or current resale price is established either. A marketplace listing, if encountered, would not by itself prove that the item was an authorized public release.

Collectors looking for a way to display a Genesis cartridge can search for a cartridge display case, but that is an accessory search—not a route to buying this promotional item. Check the specific listing for cartridge fit, display material, mounting or stand style, and whether it includes a cartridge or only the case.

Paramount describes the 2024 film as a story in which Sonic, Knuckles and Tails face Shadow. The cartridge’s character material and minigame use that film context to promote the movie; they do not establish a separate commercial game release. Paramount’s film page lists the movie as a 2024 release.
