On April 16, 2017, singer Sonu Nigam said the morning azaan—the Muslim call to prayer—had woken him and asked when what he called “forced religiousness” would end in India. His tweets sparked debate over whether he was criticizing loudspeakers at religious sites generally or attacking Islam. Nigam later said his objection was to amplified religious calls across faiths.
What did Sonu Nigam tweet about the azaan?
In a tweet dated April 16, 2017, Nigam wrote: “God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India.” Contemporary reporting reproduced the wording; the original social post URL was not verified.
In the same thread, Nigam extended his criticism to amplified religious calls at temples and gurudwaras, saying people should not be woken by religious observances they did not follow. The opening tweet’s emphasis on not being Muslim and on the azaan, however, led some readers to understand his remarks as an attack on Islam, rather than solely as a complaint about loudspeaker use.
What did he mean by “forced religiousness”?
Nigam described an unwanted religious sound reaching people outside the faith as “forced religiousness.” His thread referred to loudspeakers in more than one religious setting, while the tweet that drew the most attention singled out the morning azaan. Those two aspects shaped different readings of the controversy: his stated objection to amplified calls generally, and the specific religious framing of his initial complaint.

On April 18, Nigam said he stood by his position, describing it as opposition to loudspeakers at mosques and temples. At a press conference the following day, he called the issue social rather than religious and apologized if people had understood his comments otherwise. The clarification explained his stated intent but did not erase the wording that had prompted criticism.
How did people respond, and what happened next?
Contemporary reports described both criticism and support. Some readers saw the initial wording as targeting Islam; others supported his objection to loudspeakers at religious sites. The responses were not a single, uniform public reaction.

After a Kolkata-based cleric publicly called for Nigam to be tonsured, Nigam shaved his head. India Today later reported that he posted a video in which the morning azaan could be heard. These events became part of the story’s immediate aftermath, alongside the debate over his original tweets and his subsequent explanation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is the distinction between the tweet and the clarification important?
The controversy is best understood by keeping three things separate: Nigam’s initial reference to being woken by the azaan, his broader comments about amplified calls at other religious sites, and his later claim that his objection was social rather than religious. Reporting at the time documents both the varied interpretations and his explanation; neither should be substituted for the other.
