Unsealed court exhibits reportedly included private messages from Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, about Blake Lively and the publicity surrounding the 2024 film It Ends with Us. The remarks were reported communications—not judicial findings about the dispute or an official statement of Sony’s position.
Who is the “Sony president” in the documents?
The executive identified in the reports is Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group—not Sony’s corporate chief executive. Sony co-financed and released It Ends with Us, the 2024 adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, giving the studio a direct connection to the film and its publicity. Variety reported on the messages and Sony’s role.
What did Sony executives reportedly say?
The remarks attributed to executives came from different people and communications. They should not be treated as a single corporate view.
- Sanford Panitch: Variety reported that an August 2024 message attributed to Panitch criticized the timing of Lively’s hair-product promotion and her response to publicity problems. The outlet quoted him as writing: “The hair sell at the same time was epic level stupid. She wouldn’t listen. She knows better,”
- Tahra Grant: Variety identified Grant as Sony Pictures Entertainment’s executive vice president and chief communications officer. It quoted an August 2024 message attributed to her about Lively: “She orchestrated all this drama in a totally unsavvy and amateur way (and basically threatened…Sony) and now is mad it backfired on her.”
- Tom Rothman and Josh Greenstein: Us Weekly reported additional comments attributed to Sony CEO Tom Rothman and testimony attributed to Sony Motion Picture Group president Josh Greenstein. Those are separately attributed statements, not evidence that every Sony executive shared the same view. Us Weekly’s account describes them.
These excerpts are secondary reporting on court materials. Without treating private messages as adjudicated facts, they show that some Sony executives were discussing Lively and the film’s publicity during the period in question. They do not establish that the executives’ characterizations were correct, that Sony formally adopted them, or that the messages prove or disprove the parties’ allegations.

What was the dispute, and what has happened in court?
Lively alleged that she experienced harassment during production and that a coordinated effort was made to damage her reputation after she complained. Justin Baldoni denied harassing her or orchestrating a smear campaign. The allegations and denial are the parties’ stated positions, not findings that should be inferred from the Sony messages. The Associated Press summarized the competing claims and procedural history in its coverage.

The unsealed materials, as described in reporting, offer a glimpse of private studio-executive reactions to the film’s publicity. They do not amount to a judicial ruling on whether harassment or a coordinated reputational campaign occurred. Nor should the reported opinions of Panitch, Grant, Rothman, or Greenstein be generalized into a formal Sony position. The legal claims, the parties’ denials, and the executives’ reported messages are distinct parts of the story.
